In today's world, to speak well is more important than to write well. Agree or disagree. (2007.1.16)


Which one is more important in modern society, speaking skills or writing proficiency? As for me, I endow more significance to the former.

Nowadays, advanced technology makes people to get closer thence enables them to communicate by more convenient way --- talk. Ever since the application of telephone, the primary communication role that correspondence used to play was substitute by telecommunication, not to say nowadays widespread internet, which wholly change people’s lifestyle into online webcam. With more and more people select chatting to communicate, speaking well is by no means the fundamental key to open the door of success, no matter for business man, politician or even academician.

As for business man, the ability to negotiate is one of the indispensable characters. We can hardly image a merchant win a deal or contract without superior language skills to persuade customers or entrust clients that he or she is the a reliable and lucrative choice. To understand this, we need look no more than business schools in universities, aiming at cultivating eminent business men, all of which oblige their students to take part in several curriculums in negotiation skills and place these skills as the utmost premise into business field.

When it comes to politicians, speaking skills play an even more crucial role in their professional lives. In democratic societies, populace are endowed the rights to vote for their desirable leader, which means, for politicians, in order to start their career, they are required to win support and trust from public. How can they do this? Lecture. Through lectures all over the country, conveying their politic perspectives, expressing their personalities, showing their reliabilities; and thence winning themselves the vote. Still remember Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech? We could hardly imagine the difficulties to rally underdogs without these glib leaders, without their agitating remarks. Thus, it is undeniable that speaking well almost destines the outlook of a politician.

With the development of technology, nowadays, even academician, a career not used to require of elocution, is now subject to the direct communication, either a challenge or promotion. Even though academic essays still maintain an importation role that academicians take advantage to exhibit their ideas and researches. Academic seminars are facilitating the communication between scholars. A friend of my uncle, Jackie Lee, a Chinese biologist now pursuing his doctor degree in MIT, told me some of his experience when he first came to US. After years of hard work in the lab, he wrote many initiative theses, many of which were published in Science magazine. In year 2003, he was granted a chance to have a speech in a biology seminar. However, that was the third year he arrived at the State, and because of focus on research, he even never notice that there was a need for him to improve his English. Then, came to the seminar, after finishing his talk, many authoritative scholars showed interest in his outcome, thus they asked him some questions. Unfortunately, he was so nervous and poor in expressing his idea, he lost this excellent chance to flourish his career.

In sum, speaking skills are becoming more and more important in this society that no one could afford to ignore it.
