Research Programmes
The main intake for research degrees is at the beginning of Semester 1 in August each year. There is also a secondary intake of research students at the beginning of Semester 2 in January. However, research students enrolling in January will find it harder to fulfil the coursework requirements for research degrees, and we encourage students to come in August. For priority in the award of places and scholarships, applications for research degrees should reach us six months before the start of the semester in which the candidate intends to commence candidature, i.e. in December or June.

2. What do I need to submit for the application?

Please refer to the application form at http://www.law.nus.edu.sg/prospe ... ormResearch0910.pdf for details. What is critical is the Research Proposal that should accompany the application. The Research Proposal should be between 1,500 and 2,000 words in length, detailing the particular area/topic that you wish to devote your PhD thesis to. The Research Proposal must be sufficiently detailed to allow us to make an assessment of your scholarly potential. A list of preliminary readings (bibliography) should be appended.

3. Must I find a supervisor in advance?

There is no need to. The Graduate Committee will assess your application, and if you are successful, we will arrange for one of our professors to serve as your supervisor.

4. What is the average length of the candidature, and can it be done part-time?

Most PhD students take 3 to 4 years to complete. There is a mid-point Qualifying Examination that all students need to clear. This is usually held within 12 to 18 months of first admission. During that early period, students generally have to fulfil coursework requirements of around 6 subjects (which can be reduced to 4 or 5 at the law school's discretion, particularly if the candidate has pursued an LLM with us). Once the candidate passes the Qualifying Examination, he/she would have fulfilled the residency requirements, and can then proceed to write the thesis part-time (this can entail leaving Singapore). However, most students stay on in Singapore to complete the thesis full-time.

5. Can students with LLM degrees from other universities apply?

Certainly. As long as a student has both an LLB and an LLM (or their equivalents), he/she would qualify to apply for the PhD.

6. Are scholarships available?

Most certainly. In fact, the University is very generous with scholarships for PhD students, and all students who are admitted into the PhD programme are automatically awarded Research Scholarships. These offer a monthly stipend of S$2,000, which can be enhanced to $2,500 upon passing the Qualifying Examination. In addition, all tuition fees are waived. There are also other prestigious awards/scholarships such as the President's Graduate Fellowship and the Lee Kong Chian Scholarship which carry higher amounts of monthly stipends. There is no need to apply separately for the scholarships, as all admitted students are automatically awarded a scholarship.

7. How many PhD students are admitted in a year?

There is no minimum or maximum number. We take in any number of qualified applicants.

8. What are the employment opportunities?

Our PhD alumni have been very successful in securing academic appointments in Singapore and abroad. Recent alumni are now teaching or have taught in places such as Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore, while a number are pursuing post-doctoral opportunities. Some do not enter academia, and have remained either in practice or with the government service.

An NYU LL.M. with Asian Experience



The NYU School of Law and NUS Dual Degree Program, known informally as NYU@NUS, offers a rich range of subjects designed for students who want the rigor of a New York University School of Law LL.M. but also the opportunity to research or practice in Asia.



By partnering with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Law School is able to offer students a unique dual-degree program with a broad selection of subjects from NYU and NUS faculty, including a wealth of region-specific and comparative courses.  Upon completion of the program, students earn both an LL.M. in Law and the Global Economy from NYU, and an LL.M. from NUS. All of this takes place in Singapore, which enjoys one of the world’s most dynamic and open economies as well as being the gateway for many multinational corporations into Asia.



In partial completion of the requirements for the NUS LL.M., students may also take courses in Shanghai as part of the University’s International Business Law program.  Additionally, following the conclusion of both programs graduates may participate in an optional three-week course in New York City to supplement their studies with intensive exposure to legal institutions, thought and practice in the United States.



The inaugural class graduated 39 students from 21 countries in March 2008; the second class includes 55 students from 25 countries.



Graduates from the program are now pursuing a variety of career paths, including employment in prominent local and international law firms in Singapore and other major legal centers such as Shanghai, Dubai, and London. Others have gone on to serve in government or join an NGO, or pursue further studies in doctoral programs.



Due to a generous donation marking the inception of NYU@NUS, we are able to offer a good number of scholarships for students who enroll in the program.

汇票不用填的，你把它办出来之后夹道你的申请材料中就可以了，我都是这么做的，然后NUS收到之后就会给你平邮一个收据的

注意 最好用联邦寄，我一个朋友06年的时候用UPS寄，里面的汇票在海关被扫了出来，就把她的材料退回来了:(
