Agree or Disagree: university students should be required to take basic science classes even they are not part of the field of the study. 2007年7月7日教育类


Nowadays, there is a heated controversy that whether college require all of students to take science classes no matter what major they are in. When it comes to this question, different people have different point of views. A fairy porpotion of people hold the opinion that university students should focus on their majors classes. nevertheless, a myriad of people advocate that it is of necessity for college students to study basic science class. And that is also my point. My arguments for this point are lsited as follows.

I agree with the statement that it is a requirement for college students to learn basic science classes without reservation since studing basic science contributes to understand and grasp students' knowledge concerning their majors. It is universally acknowledged the fact that various science is in connection with each other. As for college students, not only can they gain the knowledge in their own field, but only they need to know the other realm of knowledge. If they just only study classes related to their majors, univerdity students cannot learn well. For example, both the study of physics and chemistry absolutely have a close relationship with the study of mathematics. Therefore, it is very neccesary for students who are majoring in physics and chemistry to study mathematics as well. In short, it can be said that it is helpful for students to study basic science classes in college.

Another reason why I agree with the above statament is that I believe that it is a trend for society to require students in university to master some basic science knowledge. In this society full of compitition, graduates who not only grasp major knowledge, but also get a great deal of science are so popular that they are all admitted to companies that are eminent around the world. These who have no basic science knowledge are very likely to be tided off. Therefore, college students have no alternation to study science in order to adapt the requirement of society.

Furthermore, as students who can receive higher education, they are obliged to have a comprehension of basic science due to the qualification of society. It is a common sense for students in college to attain fundamental science. At the same time, I can illustrate my point with example of great figure in the history. Da Vinci, who are one of the most prominent representative artists during the renaissance, was a painter, and a scientist as well. He made significant contribution to the world and human being. Even though it should be incompatible difficult for college students to be a man like Da Vinci, they must try their best to improve themselves and learn knowledge in other realms apart from their majors as much as possible.

In a word, from what has been discussed above, we may finally draw the conclusion it will benefit students that university should allow students to take basic science classes.
