Agree or Disagree: university students should be required to take basic science classes even they are not part of the field of the study. 2007年7月7日教育类

I cannot agree more with the statement that university students should take basic science classes regardless of their field of study. for one thing, the most important task for students going to university is not to learn specic knowledge, but to foster a way of logical thinking. Those basic science classes require more logical and deductive thinking abilities on students' part, and thus are more likely to train students to form a scientific way of approaching questions. For another, with the increasingly strong trend of cross-disciplinary researches, students equipped with more skills and knowledge outside their majors are in great demand in both job markets and reseache centers. Now let me illustrate my points in a more detailed way.

To begin with, taking basic science classes are quite beneficial for students who seek to sharpen their thinking power. For example, math makes a person accurate. When dealing with mathmatical questions, we have to be extremely careful about those figures, or a error is very likely to occure due to our carelessness. In a geometry class, students are asked to strain their imagery thinking to see a object printed in the textbook in three dimensions. In a class of physics, we have to quantify the gravity power which cannot be directly observed. All of these classes demand students to think in a precise and logical way. The ability of scientific thinking, once formed, will help us even after we graduate from university.

Secondly, knowing these science basics allow students to do cross-disciplinary work. As a result, they are much favored in job markets and research institutes upon graduation. I would like to take the computational linguistics for example. To better understand human being's language processing and producing, some scientists come across the idea to use computer language to simulate human language. This research needs people know not only linguistics but also the basics of computer science. Therefore, students knowing only linguistics certainly lose competitive edge to those who master the knowledge in both fields.

In one word, taking basic science classes is an asset to all students.

In one word, taking basic science classes (in addition to one's major,更切题)is an asset to all (university)students.
