:handshake
1、socialization的定义(来自wikipedia):the process of learning one’s culture and how to live within it. For the individual it provides the skills and habits necessary for acting and participating within their society. For the society, inducting all individual members into its moral norms, attitudes, values, motives, social roles, language and symbols is the ‘means by which social and cultural continuity are attained。
这个想法的根本出发点就在于对‘How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society.’
The statement that society's orientation is determined by the socialized level of children overemphasizes the socialization formed during one’s childhood. When we say one is well socialized, it means he or she is competent to fit into his or her own society with essential skills and habits. Those basics of adaption include professional ability, moral norms, values, social role and others. To some extent, the socialization of members does determine the society’s destiny, but not children’s alone.
Admittedly, socialization during childhood has a great influence not only on the individual but also on the society. In this level, child learns about proper attitudes, values and actions responding to the world around, also living knowledge and skills all from their parents and friends spontaneously, as well as school education passively. Well socialized children perform better both academically and practically than those who do not. And this advantage may last till they grow up because character formed in childhood is hard to change. One good example is that if the parents highly appreciate punctuality, the child will think it is natural to be punctual for people and continue to have this good habit throughout his whole life. And the opposite is just the same. How children are socialized highly impact their futures.
However, socialization does not end in childhood, or stop without formal education. In fact, socialization happens in various ways and almost every moment in one’s life. When people are grown up, they jump out the schools and into the society where they will realize it is an even big school. They will be busy fitting in a strange environment where certain beliefs or perspective they formed in their childhood have to be altered. Sometimes it goes right, hence personality and abilities of individuals get refined and they accomplish their life with honors and respect. But there are times it goes wrong and result in serious consequence. We have heard about top students in high school end up with nothing when they grow up. Or even innocent and tender child from a decent family becomes a felon in his forties. As a member of the society people are forced to refresh what they have learned before. On the other hand, mass media has more and more become an important factor that socializes individuals, including adults. Media are continually showing pictures of life and models of behavior in advance of real life through numerous critiques and TV dramas. It meets people’s need who will tend to accept the views mass media provides, eventually have his original changes. This is also a socializing process.
In that case, to develop a better society, it seems unfair and negative to just focus on the education and cultivation of younger generation, our children, but ignore that Social evolvement is a continuous procedure which requires a persistent and total refinement for all the members of that society. In my opinion, our efforts devoted to the children’s socialization are sufficient, but it will not put into use unless we prepare a better stage for the children to take the next step. Rather than thinking about what we can do to raise better children, more attention should be paid to adjust all the elements that influent socialization of every individual and give people good guidance for a better life. |
