65.The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue
stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."


很多年来我们的所有连锁店都储备了很多种类的国产奶酪和进口奶酪。然而去年，我们的最新店里五种销量最高的奶酪都是威斯康星出产的cheddar奶酪。而且，最近一次由Cheese of the World杂志所举行的调查显示，其订阅者对于国产奶酪的倾向性越来越高。由于我们公司可以通过限制库存来减少开支，在我们所有连锁店增加盈利的最好方式就是停止贮备很多进口奶酪而主要集中于国产奶酪。

In this argument, the president of a chain of cheese stores decide to discontinue stocking import of cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheese in order to improve profits. Obviously, the president fails to consider whether the newest store could present other cheese store and whether the survey by Cheese of the World could reflect public opinions, as well as other reasons influence profit.

First of all, the presidents only point out that the cheese from Wisconsin is sells well, not mentioned other domestic cheese, and domestic cheddar cheese from Wisconsin sold well in newest store does not imply that they were sold as well as in the exist stores. May be all the new stores locate in Wisconsin, thus residents are familiar with cheeses from Wisconsin; contrary to people in other place perhaps never taste them. Even tough the new stores scattered all over the country, the high sales may because of the cheese company’s sale promotion rather than the cheese’s quality, as we know, low price often is the most significant factor attract consumers, if so, the well sale trend could not last long. In addition, people pick domestic cheese may due to mad cow disease; madness epidemic situation really could scare those who used to drink import cheese.

Furthermore, the survey offered in Cheese of the World only indicate that an increasing of subscribers prefer domestic cheese, maybe this magazine only publish few in a month, therefore, the reader of the magazine is too narrow to represent public opinion. Even if the reader group is abroad, their preference may be subject to advertisement or the essays encourage people advocate demotic industry. It is also possible that the aim readers of Cheese of the World is the expert whose occupation is to research cheese production, thus, it is no doubt that they would have a preference for their own achievement.

Besides, commonsense tell us that the increase profit is a complex issue not only relay to limit inventory. If the president wants to increasing profit, he should concern the cost, but there is no evidence demonstrates that the cost on sell domestic cheese is lower than import cheese.

In summary, the president commits a fallacy of hasty generalization. If the president wants to enhance profit, he should make more extensive investigation and more profoundly analyze as well as control cost reasonable.
