TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."


The speaker asserts that the destiny of society is determined by how children are socialized and at present we do not know how to raise them to help bring about a better society. In my point of view, I disagree with the speaker's first opinion, while tend to agree with his second asserts.

Admittedly, children's socialization is very important for our today's society. With the development of the science and technology, more and more new problems come out and that requires more cooperation of the people. Children are the hope of a nation. The children who are socialized today can get along with others and can make the group work more efficiently when they cooperate with others, so that help increase efficiency of the society and benefit to nations. Take the volunteers of the 2008 Olympic Games for a instance, most of the volunteers are students. In order to do the work well they must know how to cooperate with others and treat the people in a respectful manner. The socialized volunteers contributed a lot to a successful Olympic Games.

However, it does not mean that the children's socialization determines the society's destiny. Many other factors, such as inner convictions, parental influence, moral character, and so forth, whose significance is not less than the socialization to children, also has some decisive influence on the individuals as well as the society. A remarkable example is Roosevelt, who has some physical infirmities innately and nearly spent his childhood in isolation with his odd manners. Surprisingly, eventually he became a president of the United Stated by means of his other good qualities, such as his knowledge, his raw intellect and especially for his will to overcome the physical infirmities. Take the Olympic Games for example again; the athletes get success also by their will, persistence and their great efforts for many years.

In some extent, I tend to agree with the author¡¯s second claim that we have not yet learned how to raise children who know how to create a better society. Nowadays, the current educational system overemphasizes the development of intellectual ability while ignoring their emotional health. Certain of amount of self-introspection into one's emotion is probably helpful to develop student as an overall person, which means educator including parents and schools should pay more attention on students' tolerance to others, the great respect of individual rights, sense of cooperation across cultural and national boundaries. Only in this way can we cultivate our offspring to be the all-round developed persons, at last serve the goal of building a better society.

In conclusion, when it comes to whether children grow up to bring a better society, there are many other significant characters should be cultivated in a child besides socialization. Moreover, both parents and society need to ponder long and deeply on how to raise children who can help bring us a better society.
