Agree or disagree with the following statement: it is more important to award students for effort (trying or hard working) than for achievement (good grades)

There is an interesting phenomenon that some students really study harder than some others, but they still get a lower grade than the one who do not make more effort. Controversy surrounds the question of whether it is more important to award students for effort than for achievement. I definitely hold the opinion that it is more important to award students who make more effort.

To begin with, awarding students for effort can encourage students focus more attention on their study.  It is obvious that there is link between effort and progress, generally speaking, the more effort, the higher progress. The aim of award is to stimulate students achieve more progress. But individuals present distinct qualities, such as memory, endurance, intelligence, agility, creativity, the capacity for hard work. It is common that some intelligent students do not put more effort, but they can still achieve excellent grades, whereas some blunt students should study harder in order to acquire the equal grades. Based on this conception, it is fair to encourage students who make more effort, since everyone will make more effort.

In addition, putting more emphasis on the grades may result in adverse outcomes. Generally speaking, grades to some extent can represent the effort the students make, but after all it is the result, not the process. To get the same results, there are several ways, in addition to the effort deserved, to cheat during the examination, to bribe the teachers and so on. These kinds of behaviors go far away from the aim of education. Students gradually believe that they still can get the reward by some easy yet not moral method. This will pose the risk on our society in turn. The aim of education is to cultivate children to service our society after they grow up. But with this though, they will achieve whatever they want with some immoral methods rather than efforts. For example, several companies bid for a government project. But some CEO of the firms bribe the officer in order to get the project, this not only unfair to other firms, but also undermine the society order. Thus the harm of stress more on the grade can not be neglected.

To sum up, for the sake of education, it is more important to award students for effort than for achievement, since it can encourage student to make more effort and avoid some adverse consequence.
