【题目】48.历史类(总频率103)48 "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten." [05/50; 06/7]对历史的研究把太多的重点放在对某些个人上。而历史上一些重大的事件和发展趋势不是由个别名人决定的,而是由那些已经被人们淡忘的社会群体所创造的。
Position: Both the individuals and groups of people are important to the most significant events and trends in history.
1.ordinary groups of people make contribution to the history.
2.key individuals play a essential role to give rise to the development of history, and there are some impersonal reasons why the study of history places too much emphasis.
3.the relationship between key individuals and group of people.
---------------------------正文-------------------------------------
The speaker claims that it is the masses rather than key individuals that make the most significant events and trends possible in history, therefore the study of history should pay more attention to groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten. In my opinion, however, both the individuals and groups of people are important to the most significant events and trends in history. Undeniably, groups of people are indispensable soil of significant events and trends. Nevertheless, it is the study of these key individuals that provides us with most rewarding insights and lessons.

Admittedly, ordinary groups of people make contribution to history though it is impossible that their names and stories can be found in history documents. When it comes to the Great Wall, we can’t deny the contributions by construction workers; nor could we ignore sacrifices of the millions of nameless, faceless people in World War II. Without these unnoticed ordinary groups of people, we all have no opportunities to appreciate the wonder of the Great Wall and to enjoy the peaceful environment all over the world. Furthermore, key individuals are not extraordinary supermen but one among us. Let's inspect the origins our heroes arise from. Franklin, born an apprentice, was son of a retailer, at an early age, he came to Philadelphia, where he achieved compelling success as not only a printer but also a statesman, and gained his unparalleled reputation. Take a look another father of the United States: Jefferson, author of Declaration of Independence, was first farmer, then a governor.

However, key individuals play an essential role to give rise to the development of history and there are some impersonal reasons why history remembers those great people and ignores those common ones. The famous few put more impressing effect in the history to later generations and were always the leaders of revolutions. It was their great leadership that encouraged the mass to follow up. Thus amazing power was great enough to lead a carrion society to the end and build a new one. As a result, in the study and teaching of history, while referring a period in history, we will first mention the key individuals with great fame and their contributions. Once talking about Greece centuries ago, many famous images of the philosophies and artists at that time appear in our brain; and recalling the history of wars between the states will surely reminds us of Lincoln; and Bin Laden has even become the symbol of terrorism. Moreover, lacking materials is another cause. The information of common people is hard to gather and record. Thus contemporary historians have no choice but to focus their attention on those great people in history.

Additionally, if we can understand the relationship between key individuals and the masses, we can solve the issue well. Let me make a trope to illustrate the relationship. History is like a river of time. Key individuals are stones at the bottom of the river, and accordingly the masses are water in the river. Stones, propelled by the force of water, leave their trace on the bottom and gradually form the imposing banks of canyons. Without water, stones slack at the bottom and the river is only little stream forever.

In summary, our worship to those great people in the history can never shadow the importance of majority people behind them. At the same time, key individuals play an essential role in the development of history. As a consequence, both the individuals and groups of people are indispensable to make the most significant events and trends possible in history.
