Many teachers assign homework to students every day. Do you think that daily homework is necessary for students? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.|留学


When it comes to the issue about whether teacher should assign homework to students every day, some people might assert that homework as a primary method of helping students to master knowledge and skills comes being dispensable. However, I prefer to the assertion that assigning homework is necessary to every student who studies in school or university for the following reasons.

Firstly, assigning homework plays overwhelmingly significant role in keeping the high quality of educational levels in school and university. Since homework as a mechanism to serve students to master different kinds of knowledge they studied in classroom is still important for every school or university on present educational system, teacher should positively observe this normal regulation to assign homework, by which students also clearly ascertain their weakness in different courses for the base of further development and progress. For example, there are many types of homework in my university, which is not confined to the traditional pattern of homework. If the teacher wants to know the levels of knowledge and experience apprehended by student, he can devise a subject or simple test and require the students to participate this practical activity to measure their capability in one subject.

Although some people might hold that every student should have their own direction and opinion-- if imposing large amount of compulsory “works” on them, the stereotyped standard and pattern will produce a negative influence on their development and cannot broaden horizon of students for any subject they interest, I think assigning proper amount of homework will definitely not become a negative impact, but will play a paramount role in adjusting syllabus for teachers, since losing interest only will occur in a exceptional situation-- assigning excessive amount of homework. From what have been discussed, teacher should assign homework every day in regular way, but should not assign it in large amount frequently.


Homework is the one of most methods for teacher to supervise their quality of teaching and, more important, to help students themselves to guide their study or adjust their schedule. However, according to the old aphorism (and I paraphrase :) everything is a double-sword. Frequently large amount of homework will absolutely trigger the “negative switch” and hence turn the teaching way to wrong side; in such case, any teaching method is merely the effect of indolence.
