Extended family is not as important as it was in the past.

In the past especially in 1960s-1970s, extended family is important to every family, it is common to have 7-15 members in one family. However, now, extended family is not as important as before. Many families in current society are as small as 3-4 members. As far as this phenomenon is concerned, there are some reasons should be known.
First of all, in the past, the cost of one person is lower than current, a family with more members usually does much work and owns more wealth. However, with the economic develop and more competitive in our society, the cost of one person is higher and it is more difficult to make money. Always, the decrease of cost on bring up will vacate more money to improve their lives. For example, the life in a middle class family with one child is easier than three children. Thus, many parents select to own one or two children and the number of members is reduced.
Moreover, in the past, the old people always live with their children, because they always have no income, they can’t take care of themselves. In current society, the welfare policies is improving, most old people have subsidies and have the ability to take care by themselves. Furthermore, the younger want to be more freely, and usually wish to live in their own ways, don’t want to be hindered by their old parents. My neighbor is old couple, they live by themselves happily as they have enough subsidies. They don’t want to live with their children in that they don’t want to disturb their children’s lives.
In conclusion, the two reasons mentioned above will explain the phenomenon that extended family is not as important as it was in the past. I think there are may be other reasons associated to the change of family capacity, such as change of custom and economic relationship and so on. Obviously, the two reasons mentions above may be the key causations.
