题目50.教育类(总频率7050 "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
为了提高大学的教学质量,所有的教职员工应该去校外参加一些和他们教的课程相关的工作。

Position: The speaker’s assertion is too absolute.
1. No one can deny that working experience outside the academic world really brings some benefits to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level in some fields.
2. However in other fields, it is not the case, such as pure theoretical field. It is meaningless to compel faculty, who specialize in these fields, to gain the experience in the practical work.
3. Moreover, it is a waste of time and energy to require all faculty to spend time working outside the academic world.

The speaker asserts that it is necessary for all faculties to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach on the purpose of improving the quality of instruction. Foundationally, I agree with the speaker, however, as for some particular fields in which there is no need for faculty to work outside the academic world, the assertion might not apply to them.

First of all, there is no denying the fact that the experience of working outside the academic world is beneficial to improve the quality of education at the college and university in some fields, such as electronic engineering, medical care, and market analysis, which are closely related to practice in society. With the development of science and technology, advanced techniques are everywhere in our daily life. In this situation, if someone had a creative idea to a new invention, he may encounter lots of practical problems, such as cost, market and so on. At this time, he had better ask his teachers who have a practical experience of working outside the campus for help. There is so large gap between practical and academic problems that we are not able to handle them unless the faculty in our college or university can provide some suggestions with practical experience. As a consequence, the faculty with experience of working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach really can provide a great deal of help for students. What's more, it is highly possible that this recommendation will bring some grants and fanicial support from the relevant companies and organizations for the college and university because the faculty can obtain extra paying for what they have done. As a result, it is rewarding to send faculty specialized in practical fields to work outside the academic world.

However, for some subjects, such as theoretic mathematics, atomic physics, and pure theoretic chemistry, it is a waste of time and energy to require the faculty specialized in them to work outside the academic world. Owing to the characteristics of these subjects, there is no guarantee that the faculty will be able to have good opportunities to find a place to work outside the academic world. Only colleges, universities and academic institutions need job like that. As a result, it is not easy to find proper places to carry out the plan. On the other hand, even though they were able to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, yet it is meaningless for them because these experiences are not helpful to teach these subjects well. So in my opinion, as to these pure theoretic fields there is no need to require outside working experience for faculty.

To summary, different fields own various characteristics, which require to be treated in different methods. It is not reasonable to require all faculties to work outside the academic world in relevant fields, though it is greatly beneficial to some practical subjects' faculty.
