The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's idea and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. 人们的眼神、穿着和动作都揭示了他们的态度和兴趣。你可以透过观察一个社会中人们的外貌和举止来认识该社会的理念和价值观。

Does the way people look, dress, and act reveal their attitudes and interests, even a society’s ideas and values? As for attitudes and interests, I fundamentally agree with the speaker’s first assertion. But when it comes to a society's idea and values, it is impossible to tell much about a society's idea and values only by observing the appearance and behavior of its people in my opinion.

Admittedly, appearance and behavior of people has something to do with society's ideas and tendency. Common sense tells us that, a particular group of people dress particularly the similar clothing. Take the people who hold religions for example. In Turkey, open to western culture and acceptable to capitalism, people are in favor of modern and fashionable designs of clothes, while in Iran where fundamentalism dominates the country, women are required to wear veils in public and are supposed to bare their face only in front of their relatives. In this difference of clothing lies the diversity of the society's ideas and beliefs and people can tell the extent of openness of a Middle East country through people's appearance.

However, a society's ideas and values is a synthetic concept by mixing various people or groups, the connotation of which was cumulated with lots of factors in a long term. Basic ideas and values in a special society could not easily change, but the appearance and behavior of its people is always unsettled in different periods or situations. If we look on one special part while ignore others, we will inevitably fail to reach the real ideas and values of a society.

On the other hand, the same appearance and behavior of people would not share same ideas and values in society. For instance, it is so common for an enterprise to unify his employees’ clothing by dressing the same overall and the behavior by training and regulations. In this case, we can find the appearance and behavior may be influenced by some outside powers. Consequently, it is hardly possible that every employee has different ideas and values. So if you only observe the appearance and behavior, it is highly possible that you get a false outlook of the society's ideas and values.

In conclusion, I agree the speaker's first assertion that people's attitudes and interests can be reflected by the appearance and behavior. Whereas,  if you want to find more details about a society's ideas and values, you should make a synthetic analysis through observing the appearance and behavior of the people, connecting all parts in a society and exploring every facts in a society with historical view.
