TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

The author asserts that the individual interests are more important factor for scholars and researchers, compared with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. In my opinion, although the individual interests play an essential role in the process of researches, yet scholars and researchers also should be responsible for the development of our society.
Admittedly, the individual interests are the best teacher because they not only teach scholars and researchers how to do the researches but also stimulate them with unlimited inspiration and spiritual power. As we all know when we are faced with what we are interested and love, we may contribute our whole energy and time to achieve our goal, even sacrificing our free time or other temptations. On the contrary, I cannot imagine that I do not like my job at all, how can I do it with vigor, creativity? Furthermore, everyone has its own interests which are probably different from others', especially as to some talented scholars and researchers. They always have different points of view and discover deep truth other people do not notice at all. In a word, individual interests are a guarantee for scholars and researchers to make great contributions to science or society.
However, as the creators of the original power of the development of society, scholars and researchers are bound to make contributions to the larger society. What is the purpose of science and research? To dicover the unknown field? To satisfy our curiosity? To solve practical problems? In my opinion, the ultimate purpose of science and research is to improve the development level of our society and to benefit our people and offspring. Using this ultimate purpose as our guide, we can draw the conclusion that scholars and researchers are required to maintain high moral and ethical standards in order to a balanced point which stands between their individual interests and the society benefit because it is the most important responsibility of scholars and researchers.
In addition, the wise insight is necessary to an outstanding scholar or researcher who can well combine his individual interests and demands of the larger society. In this way, this kind of scholar and researcher is exactly valuable for our society. Besides, the wise insight requires that scholars and researchers have the ability of going though the time and space to find what researches are the most valuable. Perhaps, it cannot be understood by most people, or even some opposite scholars might deny the achievements. At this time, what they should do is to insist on what they love and believe.
In summary, in the long run, most researches would more or less propel the development of our society regardless of whether they can be understood by the coeval people or not. As a result, the scholars and researches should focus on their own interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem. Moreover, the best way to fulfill their value is to combine the individual interests and demands of the larger society.
