The author asserts that the arts, such as painting, music, and literature, reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society. Foundationally, I agree with what the author maintains. Arts are based on a society and artists are living in our society and their works are created by their creative thought, which is the reflection of hidden ideas and impulses of a society. At the same time, we should not ignore that other methods are able to reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society apart from arts.

First of all, we are faced with the question that where the arts come from? The unique personality of the artists? The inspiration of them? The natural talent? The environment of our society? In my opinion, they are not enough only on thier own, but they are able to create great works of art by working together. Great works of arts are rooted from a social background, in which artists live. Then artists creat them by adding some skills and their unique understanding. Their unique understanding is probably standing for the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, or part of them.

Architecture is a good case. Architecture reveals our whole society's ideas, values and dreams. The Statue of Liberty, in New York City, stands for American spirits and pursuit for freedom, equality, and individulism. Likewise, the splendid style of Baroque building, which is designed to emphasize the supremacy of religion, is the symbol of religious domination at that time. Consequently, architecture is not only revealing the ideas and impulses of a society, but also is inspiring and encouraging its people.

Similarly, painting and music also trend to represent people emotional response to life and society which is hidden in our deep heart. It is Van Gogh, standing for impressionism, that showed the desire for freedom and passion from his "Sunflower". Also, it is Beethoven, a great musician, that moves his audience so deeply, regardless of the poor or the rich, the black or the black, because he led them to find something valuable in everyone's deep heart, which might be part of the ideas and impulses of a society.

Apart from the arts, there are other measures to reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Take the election as a good example. The election is also a way of expressing one's ideas to other people and society and can also unearth some ideas and impulses of a society. While a majority of the black found no way to get deserved respect and welfare from society, they got angry and elected Abraham Lincoln as the 16th president of United States of America, who were struggling for the abolishment of slavery and liberty of the black slaves. Besides, the establishment of laws, the mechanism of justice, and the amendment of Constitution all can reveal the ideas and impulses of society. That is to say, arts are not the only form to represent our hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

In summary, although there some other forms to reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, yet the arts are a beautiful and significant one for our society.
