Cambridge IELTS 3
Testing 2
Writing task 2
When a country develops its technology, the traditional skills and ways of life die out. It is pointless to try and keep them alive.
People’s life way and technical skills are influenced by the development of technology. However, it is biased to conclude that traditional skills or ways of life are no longer needed in modern society.
First of all, the advancement of human society is a process with evolution in many aspects, including ways of life or culture of living. Such process, to some extent, is unavoidably. In early human society, people had little tools and kills to feed themselves and defeat invading foreigners, therefore, they were inclined to living on groups. With the increase ability of surviving, people chose to live by family unit. This is a simple example for change in life style. However, it is rather a process of evolution than a process of dying out. Either living in groups or in families, people are still social ones in nature. People prefer to communicate and share life experiences in many ways, and nearly no one would choose to live on a solitary island himself or herself even if all living necessities are available.
Secondly, the technology advancement is always built on the gradual improvement of previous technical skills. For simple example in today, the internet technology would never appear without the development of computer, digital communication, and optical fiber technologies, which also followed with a series of previous technologies. Technology development is more like an improved heritage of traditional technologies or skills than an abandoning process.
Thirdly, some new technologies endow traditional living ways and traditional professions fresh contents. For example, in Chinese traditional Spring Festival, people used to ignite fireworks to celebrate the coming of a new year. Now, to protect environment, more and more people choose to colorful lasers to make joyful atmosphere instead of traditional fireworks. Also in most Chinese traditional field of Chinese drawing, in the past, people used ink to draw, while now modern 3D technologies are tried to sketch traditional landscapes. Technologies bring fantastic experiences in many traditional fields.
To conclude, development of new technologies is not obstacle of traditional cultures or ways of life, although it sometimes influences concrete contents of cultures. And traditional technologies and skills have their own evolution process, often promoting new technologies. |
