12.14日作业:Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In university, students should take the history courses no matter what field they study in.

I confess that I performed rather bad in history courses when I was a high school student. However, my personal rebellion against history courses do not effect the rationality of making history excluded from compulsory courses in university. Here comes my reasons.

Firstly, limited time should be allocated to priorities which are student's major in this case. People who claiming the irreplaceable role that history courses play in cultivating student's personality must realize the change in student's study enviroment. As spreading basic knowledge is the responsibility of the compulsory education, it is reasonable and, to some extend, necessary for high schools and elementary schools demand all students study history courses to gain some knowledge in this area. However, university is a place for student obtain deeper understanding in certain area, meaning that their curriculum should be closely related to their major. I see less meaning for students major in mathematics to study history - a course have little or even no connection with mathematics. Since so little is connected, students may as well turn it out.

Another reason support my contention lies in the fact that students can easily get access to history by other methods when they feel interesting in this realm. For example, from library they can borrow historical books covering almost every period of history, ranging from prehistory to contemporary, ancient Babylon to current Egypt. School also provide many lectures delivered by notable professors who have detailed knowledge and comprehensive understanding in history. For average students, especially students major in physical science, those books and lectures are abundant enough to satisfy their curiosity in history realm.

Admittedly, history is helpful for students to get a better understanding in the human and society. Sometimes a history story might inspire a person's interest and encourage them to plunge into a certain research area. However, if anyone wants to goes further and deeper in an intricate science realm, merely history background knowledge are far from enough to support their research. The time exhausted in history courses should be better spend in other aspects such as experiment and practice. For anyone to succeed in their realm, this two factors are indispensable and crucial.

I believe that compulsory courses should attach to student's major when it comes to study in university. If students are obliged to take course they do not like, in this case is history, it might result in unexpected and uncomfortable outcome such as high fail rate and protest behavior in the classroom. This undoubted contradict with the purpose to set history as a required course.
