Whether television functions to entertain or educate people? Seldom do people reach an agreement on this issue, which has ever sparked a high controversy in the society. Those who argue that television is a good way of education held the idea, in most cases, that there are ocean of information the television conveys to broaden people’s horizon. However, in my mind, television serve more to entertain than to educate.
To begin with, most of the television programmes are designed recreational, such as Variety Show, comedy, and Soap opera, in purpose of catering to people’s taste, mostly tending to some funny or not abstruse programmes. In order to be commercioganic and attractive to the advertizers, the TV stations have to avoid making those programmes embracing large amount of useful knowledge that may not be as popular as the vulgar ones, they can’t sustain themselves otherwise. Thus, people actually get more fun rather than education from television programmes.
In addition, television programmes attach primary importance to help people relieve the pressure from work and study. Supposing you are tired and exhausted after a day’s boring work, which kind of programme will you prefer when sitting in front of the TV screen? A funny TV series or a serious documentary? Definitely, it is funny programme like the Superidol, Top Model or Desperate Housewives that can bring laughter and happiness to people, which is a good way of dispelling stress, pressure and depression. This is why more funny programmes than those educational ones are on TV, because few of people would like to be educated after work and study.
What’s more, the information on the screen is just like “fast food culture”, simple and superficial. For the sake of being understandable to all the audience, TV station are more likely to make a shallow programme, aiming to spread mass culture, instead of elite culture. Even though people can catch some information, the speed of television programme makes it impossible for people to keep them in mind. If we want to learn knowledge, we might as well read some books which is a more effective way to get education.
Of course, people can learn some experience from TV programme. For example, we can learn skills of cooking, how to avoid being cheated and the like when we are watching TV programmes, which may be useful in our life. And television can introduce people new things as well.
In conclusion, comparatively, people are more entertained rather than educated by television programme, in spite that it can provide people with a way to access to some experience and new things.
