Argument Task 2 (Argument100)

The following appeared in a memo from the chief operating officer of the Presto Manufacturing Company.
"Since orders for our major product increased by over 200 percent last quarter, we should promptly expand production by building a new manufacturing plant in Summit City. Summit City is the ideal location for the new plant because it has low property taxes, extensive blocks of land available for immediate purchase, and a large number of residents who are not currently employed."

In this memo, the officer recommends to build a new manufacturing plant in Summit City. To support this he point that the orders for their major product increased last quarter. He also use the fact that the low property taxes, extensive blocks of land and large unemployed residents of Summit City as evidence. Though it seems to be reasonable, a careful examination would reveal how groundless it is.

First, Even the order of their products increased last quarter , there is no grantee that they would continue to be increase in the future .The officer fails to consider the factor of time which perhaps can change everything including purchase habit and market competition. Perhaps the sell of such product is quite seasonal, after a period of time,the demand of the products may decline. Therefore there is no use to build a new manufacturing plant. Nowadays, no one can use previous experience to make decision.

Second, giving that it is necessary to build a new plant, there is no reliable evidence that Summit City is the ideal location. The low property taxes and extensive blocks of land may indicates the area is barren. The transport may be inconvenient or there may be no link to the major market and raw material resource .Much would be cost on convey things in and out of the city. Therefore, Summit City can hardly be considered as a desirable plant location .

Third, many unemployed residents does not equal to sufficient qualified workers. Perhaps, the Company produce high-tech production which ask for workers with special knowledge and lush experience. Lacking such intellect , the residents there can not cope well with the tasks involved in the producing process. As
a result , the plant there have to employ workers from other place which would certainly add to their expense.

In the sum , the memo fail to support what it tries to support. To make it convincing, the officer should ensure the necessary of building a new plant according to the market demands in the foresee future. In addition, when they chose the best location, the overall situation of the place should be take into consideration , including transport condition and educational background.
