The lecturer mainly talks about whether it’s OK to work a four-day week. He points out that the four-day work option won’t benefit companies, employees as well as the whole country, while the passage is in favor of the new option.

First, the lecturer reminds us the four-day work option will end up costing the company more. The company needs to hire more workers to finish the same quantity of work in a certain time. Since the number of the employees’ increases, the company has to cover more of employees’ training fee and medical care. What’s more, it has to supply more facilities, such as computers, and find more space for workers to stay. In contrast, the passage believes the new option will ensure the workers work efficiently without making too much errors resulting from exhaustion, thus increasing its profit.

Second, for the whole country, new job opportunities won’t present due to the new option. Companies will urge the workers to work overtime to live up to their high expectations inhering from the old schedule, which will create no additional jobs. On the counterpart, the passage hold that out of the need to finishing the same work, companies need to hire more employees, which will eventually benefit the whole country’s economy.

Third, the four-day work will risk reducing the employees’ quality of life. The contrast argument in the passage is that the new option will give employees more free time, which they can enjoy themselves and live a better life. However, the lecturer warn us more free time will tamper workers’ job ability, decrease their advancing career and promotion opportunity, which will certainly reducing their quality of life.
