Is it unnecessary to retrospect to the past for guidance because things are new and complex today, as the speaker maintains? In some sense some old doctrines and principles exactly can not adapt with the current complicate conditions. Nevertheless, the speaker overlooks the role of learning history and ineptly generalizes the conclusion that we can gain little by looking back for an understanding of the past. In contrast, I hold the opinion that getting better knowledge of the past can not only benefit our personal life but the development of the whole society.

At the individual level, learning some past things plays a significant role in helping us tackle with the unavoidable difficulties and setbacks which we encounter in contemporary society. First of all, from history we can learn about some great peoples’ anecdotes and stories, and such knowledge is conducive to one’s building of confidence and encourages today’s people to face sorts of challenges actively no matter how difficult the circumstances are.
For example, martin Luther king, a former notable revolutionist in American history who run after freedom and equality in the era when the racial discrimination was fierce, and today it is that strong spirit of him inspires the nation people to pursue democracy and freedom consistently. In the other hand, some merits of historical personalities such as diligence, persistence, and fortitude can influent the people who learn something about them, and this influence helps develop and shape our personality, characterizes and maturity, especially in a person’s early time.


At the social level, history is a textbook to teach us to discern which is virtue and which is evil in our world and to guide us to avoid repeating mistakes made by our predecessors. Consider, the field of advanced technology, for example, the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986 rung the alarm for the whole society, especially the scientists who engaging in hi-technology, accordingly, from this aspects the learning of history can make the related areas even the whole society reconsider carefully what they are doing and alert them that some technological innovations can also bring the potential damages while they serve the society in the other way. Another striking example which illustrates learning history can make the society develop in the right way is that two world wars which erupted in the 20th century, the people who even know little about the history may know that the drastic pains and hurts to the country which engaged in those wars, and this period of history reminds our humankind to cherish today’s peace and eliminate the conflicts in order to avoid the replay of such tragedy.

However, it is undeniable that history is constituted of kinds of events that happened in certain time, at certain place, and under certain condition. And mounts of new problems emerge in contemporary society everyday, so which is understandable that looking back for an understanding of the past may prove vain in deal with some fresh things appearing in our time.

In sum, we should not neglect the sense of recalling and learning history which benefits our people and our society in the term of encouraging and guiding. And at the same time we must equip ourselves with new tactics to deal with unprecedented and complex things in modern society.
