argument40
The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Excello Food Markets.
"In 90 towns where Excello has food markets, natural-food stores specializing in organic food products—products containing no chemical preservatives and made with foods grown without pesticides—have opened nearby as competitors. Surveys of our own customers reveal a growing concern about foods grown using pesticides or preserved with chemicals. Recently our market in Sun City participated in a local food tasting fair, and 75 percent of the fair goers who visited the Excello booth requested free samples of organic fruit. Such evidence indicates that to increase our profits, we should begin to stock a full line of organic food products in all our markets."

The president recommends that Excello Markets should begin to stock a full line of organic food products in all their markets to increase profits. To support his recommendation, the president lists various evidence that customers have a preference on organic food. However, the argument is logically flawed in several critical respects.

First of all, the aurthor cites that natural food stores specializing in organic food products have opened nearby as competitors. But he unfairly assumes that Excello will lose its customers. Perhaps the food sold by those natural food stores are different from those in Excello. Even assuming that those stores are potential threat to Excello, it is still possible that people prefer to buy food in Excello because of the lower price and better service. Without ruling out these factors, it will be arbitrary for the author to conclude that Excello will lose customers.

Secondly, the survey is not persuasive enough because we are not provided with sufficient information about it. Such as when it was rasied, or how many people had taken part in this survey. If the survey was raised ten years ago, I would doubt if the result is still of any value. Even if we assume that the survey is reliable, it is still possible that people feel good about food is preserved with chamicals or containing pesticides becuase it has not shown any bad effects.

Thirdly, the tasting fair in Sun City does not surely indicates that people prefer organic food more than regular food. Since the samples are free, people will surely love to taste it. And it is entirely possible that most of the customers also tried many regular food. Moreover, the author fails to account for alternative explanations for their behavior. Perhaps people tasted these samples just because they felt curious about them. Maybe they found it not so delicious as they had expected.

Finally, even assuming that people actually prefer organic food than regular food. It is not certain that Excello will gain more profits through stocking a full line of organic food products. Maybe the cost of those food are so great that Excello can hardly get any profits. If they set a higher price, there might be less customers.

In sum, the recommendation relies on certain doubtful assumptions that render it unconvincing as it stands. To bolster his recommendation, the author must provide better evidence that people really love organic food and they will choose them even they are expensive. To better assess the argument, I also need to know more details about the survey and people’s satisfaction about Excello.

这里会不会比较倾向于说明有机食品受欢迎啊 而不是抢市场

Secondly, the survey is not persuasive enough because we are not provided with sufficient information about it. Such as好像后面接名词啊不是句子啊 when it was rasied, or how many people had taken part in this survey这一条怎么不展开呢?. If the survey was raised ten years ago, I would doubt if the result is still of any value. Even if we assume that the survey is reliable, it is still possible that people feel good about food is preserved with chamicals or containing pesticides becuase it has not shown any bad effects.
