Some people may maintain that everyone has only one lifetime to live,and that it is no use doing things that go against their willingness,and that we should try all possible means to enjoy the privilege that we are innately endowed with.
Unfortunately,I am fully convinced that most of us have a misconception about the real meaning of “enjoyable”. Maybe the perfect situation we are dreaming of is that,having no work to do,lying on the couch lazily,eating fish and chips,while watching movie in a warm afternoon.But what if everyday is exactly like that and no work is waiting for us forever？That will be the hell,for paradise is not the place where we take everything for granted,but the place where we achieve our lifelong aspirations through hardship and effort.
We live in a world in which every one wants to be successful.Nothing is wrong about the desire to be No.1,and there is no doubt that being successful is enjoyable.Nevertheless,it is somewhat childish to think we can be finally successful by only doing what we enjoy doing.We may categorize things into two groups,the enjoyable and the unenjoyable;at the same time,another category can be made: the necessary and the unnecessary.The point is,things that are necessary are not always enjoyable and things that are enjoyable sometimes may be unnecessary.We all admire even envy those who now have attained great achievements,such those famous stars as Jacky Chen.However,he once told that when he was still a teenager,he and his partners were required to practice more than 12 hours a day.But for yesterday’s struggle,today’s glories could not exist.
Now you may realize that life is nothing but a paradox,for the harvest is so sweet but the way pursuing it is so arduous.Well,that is the inevitability of destiny,the essence of sacrifice,the responsibility of life.I never remain suspicious of the value of the motto,“never tiring,never yielding,never finishing”.Compared to what I mentioned before,it is not only about one lifetime to live,but also to fulfill,to satiate our own soul.After years of ceaseless striving,the day you realize your dream is the day you finally touch the essence of “enjoyable”.
However, I am definitely not promoting Stoicism in ancient Greece.It is also unjustified to stop all recreation and go to another extreme.
