147. "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
传统和现代化是水火不容的。人们必须二者选一。

Most people share a belief that tradition and modernization are incompatible, like the speaker, one must choose between them. Are we must chose? Can't there any method to help us solve the dilemma? As far as I am concerned, tradition is the base and motivation ofmodernization, and modernization is the developmentand innovation of tradition, both of them are the important aspects of our society and history. They can compatible harmonious and perfectly when the definitions of the two concepts are clearly.

Firstly and fundamentally, we should make clear definition of tradition and modernization. If tradition just refers to ancient relics and conservative customs, and modernization merely means technology and machines, I agree that it is difficult to combine them together, as one cannot take use of high-technological method to recreate and rebuild any traditional relic completely. Though scientists could rebuild the style of them but it is impossible to review the connotation. In this situation, tradition means past and history which can't come again and modernization means present and progress developing every seconds, who can combine past and now together? Nobody.

However, I would like to discus anther situation not the abstract concept but the concrete existence of tradition and modernization. From arts to business, from science to individual's lives, numerous examples could support and illustrate that tradition and modernization could blend together.

Firstly, when it comes to arts: music, painting, architect, or even sculpture , there is no denying that any art achievement is develop from its predecessors , from the tradition. For example, the rock-and -roll music, a typical representative of modern society, is based on traditional music. Without the invention of tempo, rhythm and the scale, how to rock music create its own characteristic. And, the modern paintings, works of Dali or Picasso， most people consider them are very different form “Mona Lisa” or "Sunflower" yet, without Leonardo da Vinci and Van Gogh, the painting skills and methods, Dali or Picasso’s work cannot be considered as great works. That is to say, traditional experiences and ideas are the roots of modern arts.

Secondly, in the science realm, almost all the significant discovery and development were relied on the achievement of their formers, from physics to Chemistry , from medical to astronomy. Einstein's general theory of relativity, to some extent, come from Newton's theory.
For Morgan in his own way had discovered afresh in America the materialistic conception of history discovered by Marx forty years ago, and in his comparison of barbarism and civilization it had led him, in the main points, to the same conclusions as Marx. Owing to the traditional scientific success, modern sciences could arrive at a higher level and contributing to our lives.

Thirdly, Many traditional wisdoms are still relevant and can inspire us to search for solutions to present problems. Over the past tens years, more and more people, especially the businessmen have been lecturing and consulting on the subject of Sun Tzu's Art of War and its application and relevance to business practices and planning. In addition, other fields and subjects still have many illustrations, which could support that tradition and modern are not conflict with each other, on contrary, they can compatible.

Obviously, both tradition and modernization have advantage respectively and can help to each other. We should make great effort to preserve and develop their advantage rather than to choose one and refuse another.
