Do you agree or disagree: governments should spend more money in support of arts than in support of athletics such as state-sponsored Olympic teams

Whether arts or athletics should be granted priority of the government is a complex issue that different people may have different ideas. But to me, I assume that both arts and athletics function as important emblem for a nation’s development, thus they should be given equal attention and support.

To begin with, arts are the one of the direct indicators of a nation’s cultural level. It showcases not only the history of a nation, but also the latest trend in the society. Those countries which contributed great arts to the world are always considered as rich in culture and thus are remembered by generations and generations. For example, many people would think of Italy first of its great arts in Rome times and its leading role in Renaissance era, others might remember France with its spectacular baroque arts while still others are fascinated by Spain for its pioneering position in modern art movement. In this sense, arts play indeed import role in displaying the cultural achievement of a nation, and therefore, fairly deserve its attention and support from the government of the country.

Besides, it is the same case when it comes to athletics. A nation’s sport level offers clear information of the living standard its people. If we look back on the final gold medal board of every Olympic games, we will notice that on top of the charts are always those countries with great social prosperity and high economic development. This actually is not surprising because only those countries which could offer its citizens with greater living standard could in turn, provide them with the opportunity to have better performance in sports games. In this sense, athletics are as well important to a nation because they symbols the general welfare and social development level of the nation.

Moreover, I want to point out that in fact government has the obligation to support both arts and athletics because it is not easy for both artists and athletics to gain financial support. Except for those prominent ones, most artists and athletics do not even have many chances to make money for their living. Under such circumstances, government indeed needs to offer its aid to both groups with equal attention, as to boost the overall thrive of both realm.

To conclude, both arts and athletics could function to display the social achievement of a nation, and they play very import role in forming the image of a nation in the eye of global society. Thus, both realms should be attended and supported with equally. Besides, government should indeed offer its support to both artists and athletics because otherwise, important as they may, both artists and athletics lack the resources to gain enough financial support as to continuing their endeavor.
