Over the past decades automobile become a symbol of modern society and people reap great benefits from this vehicle. From every aspect of life, human beings enjoy the convenience of automobile, traveling on a SUV, transporting cargo in a truck, and the like. But at the same time the increasing number of automobile causes problems, such as air pollution, traffic jams and car accidents. Taking both advantages and disadvantages into account, I am in favor of the idea that drivers should pay extra money when driving in the busy streets. Thus, there will be fewer cars and less congestion in cities.

In the first place, the measure enables persons to save time and improve work efficiency. People need not spend extra hours waiting irritatingly in a car or bus when this measure works. The less time a person uses on road, the more freedom he/she has to deal with daily routine. For instance, I often hear my elder brother complaining about traffic jams in Beijing. On workday, he must get up early to avoid the rush hour in the morning but still waits in the long queue of vehicles after work. When getting home, he fells even tired because of the choking traffic. If this measure goes into effect in Beijing, my brother will have one hour available for family or job instead of sitting before the steering wheel.

Also, the decrease of cars in streets means less harmful gas exhausted into the air. A living environment with fresh and clean air is the pursuit of people all over the world. Reducing the usage of automobile at a reasonable level is the first step to achieve that goal. I still remember the starry night and comfortable breeze in my hometown when was a little child. However, it only exists in my memory now. Every time walk on the main street in downtown, I am immersed in the disgusting smell of gasoline not the aroma of flowers. How much I yearn for those days in my childhood! Under this measure it may take us generations to go back those starry nights, but it deserves.

At last, smooth traffic makes a contribution to the control of traffic accidents. The frequency of car accidents ascends almost synchronously with the increase of automobile. In the past, a car accident was the focus in public. But nowadays this kind of news becomes ordinary and less news value. Obstructed on the road for hours, drivers, even the experienced ones, will be annoyed. Then vexation probably results in careless driving. The new method should be a proper solution to congestion, which may diminish accidents of this type.

In conclusion, charge extra is one of appropriate ways to cope with traffic congestion. Any society that ignores this problem would pay a heavy price.
