Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The ability to cooperate with other well is more important today than in the past. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.（03/04/07）

When it comes to an essential topic of whether team work is more important today than in the past, there are always diverse viewpoints among the general public in society. No one can deny the necessity of cooperating with others, and we can't live without team work not only in hundreds of years ago, but also in the highly developed world. In my opinion, cooperation plays highly important role in our daily life nowadays.

An adage says that one stick can be easily broken, but several sticks combine together are invincible. Cooperation is essential in our life. When we were young, teachers always tell us stories about how animals cooperate with each other. A group of young lionesses advances on the herd and pushes the herd in the direction of a different lioness who has hidden herself downwind. Then this concealed female chooses the weakest member of the herd for the kill. Our ancestors hunt in the same way. At the beginning of human history, cooperation brings sufficient food to human beings, but the definition of cooperation has been expanded now. Not only do we need it at work, but we also welcome it in competitions, new inventions, technological developments, etc.

Furthermore, facing the alarming environmental problems which we haven't met before, human beings’ team work is the most powerful weapon. There is little doubt, however, that environmental pollutions in most areas results primarily form human activities rather than natural processes. For example, overcultivation, overgrazing, firewood gathering, and overirrigation have been identified as the four major activities which contributor to the desertification processes. Obviously, provided we don't combine together and exert our utmost to reduce the erosion, the pollutions will continue to increase, and we will lose our amazing planet and our comfortable life in the near future.

However, a growing number of selfish people don't concern about cooperation anymore. On reason is that the number of one-child family increases nowadays, in which those child are frequently spoiled by parents and treat themselves as king or queen in their families. They are too selfish to realize the importance of team work, instead, they believe that they can handle anything without help. Another reason is that people are gradually indifferent with each other. They would prefer stay at home alone rather than talk to their neighbors. At this tight spot we have the duty to join together by telling those ignorant people the truth, and show them how powerful cooperation is.

For the reasons presented above, I strongly approve of the statement that the ability to cooperate with other well is more important today than in the past. We should rebuild it, enjoy it and make good use of it to fight against our "enemies".
