Argument242
In the editorial above, the author statedmainly 2 points to support the final conclusion that ‘theseinstitutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton’s’ forcombating the increasing cheating cases. These 2 evidences that thedescent in the number of the cases of cheating and ‘a recent survey’ bythe Groveton honor concil seemingly logical, however, I could find itsshortcommings from several aspects as follows.
According to the honor council of Groveton, the adoption of honor code has greatly solve students’ cheating phenomenon inacademic, which is supported by their recent survey. Thus, they suggest to apply the honor code to college and university nationwide. This argument seems logical as they compare the cheating rate before and after the publication of honor code, however, some facets remain questionable.
First of all, statistics given is one-sidedand not persuasive. Since reduction of cheating rate in 5 years may reveal the success of the changed system, as well as the decreased enrollment. There are possibilities that after 5 years, the reduction of student population which maybe given birth by the lowered birth rate as a character of modern life, or the narrowed entry to university may joint the effort to explain the reduction ofthe cheating case. Moreover, as it is known to all, we don’t judge a plan successful or not by simply the dropping and increasing number, but by itsrate. Thus, when the honor code meets the dropping population, fewer students tends to cheat, or not, or contrarily, more, relatively as a whole, how on earth it will act remain puzzle.
Secondly, since the “recent survey” is conducted mainly on students in Groventon College, the result may not be convincing. As no student dares to claim to be a cheater in public, there might be less exception in the questionnaire. After all, cheater won’t claim the current beneficial-to-him system to be useless.
Finally, suppose the reduction rate is favorable to the judgment of the adoption of the code. Some alternatives concerned are still neglected. Such alternatives may include the fact that students in Groveton have well-accepted the moral education during this period,or that relevant punishment have been systematized and well-accomplished, which prohibit the potential cheaters. As we all know, no legal system is alike but still suits for its nation, they tackle all kinds of cases in order to keep theirnation in order. Considering the culture, character or so, what is the adaptive may be optimal legal system. And this also applies to the honor code.
Overall, the judgment of the effectiveness of the honor code doesn’t merely depend on the dropping number, as what is discussed above, statistics should turn to the dropping rate, and councils are supposed to draw attention on the study of outcome. At last, before adoptingthe honor code, administrators should bring culture, character into consideration. Sometime, amendment is welcome. |
