Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for a teacher try to help students to gain self-confidence than to teach them specific knowledge. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Different people might have different ideas concerning which is a more important job for teachers to do: building up students’ self-confidence or conveying specific knowledge. As to me, I generally believe that while self-confidence is of great importance to a student’s character, the specific knowledge is also crucial for his/her growth. Thus teachers should give enough attention to both aspects in teaching practice.

To begin with, it is true that self-confidence is very important character. Looking back into history, we will find that most of the successful people, whatever their occupation, all have shown great self-confidence in their career. In my opinion, one obvious reason for such phenomenon is that people with self-confidence tend to think and act positively when they meet obstacles in their endeavor, comparing to those with less self-confidence who tend to give up much more easily.

Given that self-confidence is a positive character, then the teachers’ role in building up student’s confidence looms large. We all know now that most of our characters are formed at our early ages, and specifically, during our school years. Thus, it is quite necessary for teachers to realize the importance of self-confidence education and try what they can to encourage students’ self confidence. Indeed the teachers could do a lot about this. For instance, when a student asks questions, no matter how silly the questions might seem, the teachers could praise the student for raising the question, and give proper instructions to encourage the student to solve the problem by himself/herself. In this way, students could gradually have self-confidence in raising questions as well as independent problem solving. In fact, there are many jobs that teachers could do to build up a student’s self-confidence, which will benefit the student for their whole life-time.

However it should be pointed out that bare self-confidence does not guarantee a student’s success. In fact, this kind of self-confidence is indeed blind, which only dose harm for the students. It is only when self-confidence is based on solid knowledge that a student truly learns. Therefore, while teachers should emphasize in their teaching on students’ self-confidence, they should not ignore the importance of specific knowledge. The teachers need to help to build their students’ solid knowledge basement, on which the students’ self- confidence could safely base on.

To conclude, both self-confidence and specific knowledge are very important for a student’s growth. Thus the teachers need to give both aspects enough attention and consideration in their teaching practice.
独自等待.默默忍受.
