Is it better to spend money on something that lasts long time, such as an expensive piece of jewelry, or spend on something that provides a short-term pleasure, such as a vacation?


Something last for long or something offers a short-time pleasure? It seems to me, the latter is more enjoyable and worthwhile, as discussed below.

The first reason that I choose the latter one has something to do with the satisfaction of mental need. Psychologists divide mental satisfaction into two kinds: delayed satisfaction and immediate satisfaction. Clearly, the former one means that you can not get thing satisfying you immediately, in order to hold it, you must wait for some time, maybe a long period of time; in contrast, you can get the latter one in no time. Returning to the today's topic, something that lasts long time, such as an expensive piece of jewelry, is included in things that provide delayed mental satisfaction, while something provides a short-term pleasure, such as a vacation, offer immediate mental satisfaction. As an undergraduate student, I devote myself into the school study, the part-time job, which leave no spare time for me. And I feel exhausted recently. I need a break undoubtedly. Consider that, a vacation just shoot the point. Obviously, a vacation can help me relax, benefit my health both physically and psychologically; in turn, I can devote to my academic study and job more energetically after that. However, none of these could be achieved by a piece of jewelry.

The second reason is related to human memory. Although a vacation is short-term, the memory can last for long. Which kind of memory? On the vacation, one can view natural scenarios, hear the birds singing, inhale the fresh air, touch the soft soil, all of which construct a beautiful picture, which will appear in your memory never facade. As long as you recall, you can get the enjoyable feeling once again, just as you are on the vacation, without failure. Even 50 years later, when you are too old to go outside, you can still experience the excellent feelings. Memory is the most faithful. On the other hand, something lasts for long, either a piece of jewelry or a house, or a sports car, always call for long-term devotion and hard-work to get it. What will be in your memory related to the process to own it?--You worked day and night; you were languish; your appearance betray your real age--Is it really worth these in the long-term view?
Finally, consider the experience brought by the two choices respectively. A vacation could enlarge your perspective, extend your knowledge, offer your a chance to communicate not only with the natural environment, but also with people who take the vacation with you--people you already known or not. Admittedly, the glorious jewelry can offer you the feeling of self-dignify, especially when you show it to other people. But, it is vanity which leaves at the end, especially when you sit alone consider the process you get it.


In sum, although something that lasts long time, for example, an expensive piece of jewelry, can satisfy us in some extent' something that provides a short-term pleasure, such as a vacation, is more valuable, in the respects of the physical and psychological need and the long-term influence.

如果说长期的东西 VS. 短期的东西，直觉地当然选长期的东西咯，但是珠宝 VS. vacation,就会选择vacation去了。
