From my own standpoint and experience, I wish I could form the good habit of doing only one thing for one time. I've been burned too many times by this problem.
The worst effect of having more than one thing on hand is the inevitable confusion in many aspects. Take myself as an example: I often spend my spare time on writing novels. As long as I have the inspiration or impression, I will choose a new article to start, thinking that my previous novels are not in accordance with this new idea. Thus, there are many documents in my computer with only a beginning paragraph. For millions of times, I find myself puzzled in deciding which of all these novels to update this time. Obviously, that's a tremendous difficulty. Before I start writing, I must set myself into a mood harmonious with what I intend to write. But these novels yet to be chosen are of different types, different contents, different styles of anguage, sometimes even different languages. What's more, for several times, I confuse the characters of two novels since normally I work on at least two novels at the same time. Once I even mistook a girl for a man because of their similar names. What a bad and inefficient result it is!
Besides, trying finishing two things simultaneously will always turn out to be time-consuming. The brain is kind of the computer, thus the processing speed depends highly on how much space remains. That means concentration brings efficiency, that is, a rapid and successful ending. Still take myself as example: Every time I change the writing document, I must spend time on reviewing the previous content and I always find 2 hours or a whole afternoon passing by without noticing.
To sum up, I prefer finishing the project on hand before starting a second one to trying finishing the two together.
