Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Extended family is not as important as it was in the past. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. （09/22/07）

It is true that these days more and more people live independently from their family and there are fewer and fewer extended family in every culture. The fewer appearances of extended family make some people think that extended family is not as important as it was in the past. As far as I am concerned, there are merits in this opinion, though extended family has some advantages, with the rapid development, the importance of extended family decreases.

I admit that extended family has helped people a lot through out our struggle to survive in the world. From the very beginning, when people could not defend themselves from all the obstacles in nature alone, they gathered together to help each other and managed to survive. I think it is the origin of extended family. As time went by, people clinged to this practice and enjoyed all the benefits that extended family brought to them. The old helped to take care of the young, women take care of food and clothes, while men went out to work to support the family. The experience and information on how to survive passed down from generation to generation in the family. People thrived in this way. But now, time changes and everything changes. Nowadays people can thrive without extended family.

First and foremost, with the development of technology, when facing the nature disasters befall us, we are not as vulnerable as our ancestors. Dams defend us from flood; improvement in agriculture ensures enough food for us; water supply systems work efficiently when drought takes place. We do not have to stay together to survive, the most important reason for the occurance of extended family does not exist today. While every person has his/her own work, we cooperate to create a better world. In this world, we just have to finish our own work and then enjoy all the advantages that the development has offered. Without a extended family, we can also have a good life today, while tens of thousands of years ago, the person lived alone was meant to starve to death.

Moreover, because of the social division of labor, we can find perfect people to help us do different specific work now. As a result, the help that we receive from extended family seems not that necessary. For example, baby sitters can take good care of our children when we are out at work; cleaners can keep our rooms neat and tidy everyday.  Even the experience and information that the old have can be learned in class or the Internet.

From what have been discussed above, I believe it is clear that the extended family is not as important as it was in the past. The fewer occurrence of extended family today is the best certification.
