机经 48. Reasons why people work other than earning a living

outline: 1. Money is not the only reason
             2. interest is one reason
            3.responsibility is another one
            4. conclusion

Undoubtedly, everyone on the earth relies on food, clothes, house, and so forth to be living, therefore, money is needed. How would people usually do to earn the money? They work! Money seems to be a basic and important element to consider when people are searching or choosing a job. However, there are many other factors that are of equal or more significance for people to work, among which interest and responsibility are especially common.

First, interest in a field has huge strength to push people working hard and enjoy a life in work. This is especially true in science field. As we may have known, it is not so easy to earn so much money to do scientific research as to do business or to be a lawyer, but still, millions of people around the world are devoting their lives on scientific study. Why? Their interest in their working field may be the best explanation. Jingrun Chen, a famous math scientist in China, tended to forget everything else when calculating a math equation, even including eating. During his entire life, he is poor. But I guess he did not at all care about it. The only reason for him to keep working is because he had strong interest in proving a theory or solving significant math problems. It is interest that guide people to get into certain field and earn a satisfaction in working.

Second, strong responsibility for family, nation, or even the world forces many people to work. There are always a lot of work that are poor-paid, difficult, and even dangerous, for example, to be a soldier, but there is never a time that nobody went to be a soldier. Someone may argue that it is because those who became soldiers need money to live. But there are always so many kinds of occupations that they can choose from, why they finally chose to be soldiers anyway? I think one Chinese song perfectly described the soldiers' thinking: If nobody came to be soldiers, how our family and nation will be protected? Their sense of responsibility for the nation leads to their choice to become honored soldiers who are living in extremely hard conditions and far away from their family and hometown. Our respect should be given to those people who work not only for themselves, but for the benefit of other people or the whole human being.

To sum up, people work not only for money, but for many other things they consider important too. What differ human from normal animals is that people consider far more than survival when they are doing stuff. Just because of so, we are enjoying a peaceful world and flourishing society.

137. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? High schools should allow students to study the courses that students want to study. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Admittedly, interest is the best teacher ever. When people are learning something they are truly interested in, they will show the strongest passion and making the most effort, thus best learning. But when it comes to high school students, should they be allowed to choose the courses they are interested in and want to study? I will give a definite NO. Three reasons are given as follows.

First and the most important, letting high school students choose courses by themselves will lead to absence of learning something truly important. As we all know, some basic courses, such as math, English, physics, and so forth, are really necessary and useful not only for our daily life, but also for further learning of other courses. Without learning of math, we cannot well calculate taxes, sales, or interest, and will not be able to protect ourselves when dealing with money; without learning of English, we will not be able to well communicate with foreign friends, read literatures written by English, and handling business with foreign corporations; without learning of biology, people will not gain common sense on living mechanism of organisms, and also, when people want to further their study on medicine, biology is the prerequisite. However, high school students may not be able to see the significance of these courses and not at all have an interest in choosing them, which will result in their difficulty in daily lives and lack of background knowledge for further study on other field.

Even if high school students have chosen all the basic and important courses, their selection of other courses may distract their learning and waste their time. Time is limited for students, when they are investing too much time on learning courses they want to study, they will not have enough time and energy to handle the important ones. When I was in high school, a friend of mine was a big fan on violin. To obtain better performance, she kept practising 3 hours every day when she came back home from school. Sometimes she was so tired that she could not finish all the homework on time, not to mention review and preview courses. She made a huge progress, but, at the same time, her scores for courses in school made a huge fall. Finally, she had to decrease the time of practising violin. In this case, my friend just spent spare time on learning what she is interested in, which shows a negative effect on learning school courses. Can you imagine what will happen if students' hobbies become their courses?

Finally, limited financial and substantial resources cannot support students' free choices of courses. Interests are diverse among people. One hundred students may have one hundred interests. Does that mean school will have to design one hundred courses to satisfy all the students, for example, to build a pool for 100/4000 students who are willing to learn swimming? That will be so inefficient and unpractical. Therefore, to sum up, high school students should not be allowed to choose whatever courses they want to study, but focus on necessary and important courses in school, and enjoy their hobby in spare time.

Compare and contrast learning by doing to learning by reading. In your opinion, which is better? Use specific examples to support your opinion?

Reading is the key to the progress of human. It is reading that made the spirits of our ancestors and advanced technologies pass by from generation to generation, therefore, learning by reading is especially necessary and important. However, when comparing learning by reading to learning by doing, I still consider the latter to be better. Two reasons are given as follows.

First, in many cases, doing is the only way to learn. This is especially true for the learning of music, dance, sports, and so forth. When we are interested in some kind of sports, for example, tennis, what we have to do is just to find a coach, follow his/her behavior or gesture, and practice again and again. Although reading some books on skills of Tennis may help in improving our master of it, without the tennis pat in our hands, we will never known how to play with it. Another example is the learning of dance. As we all know, the bones of kids are much softer than adults, so the younger we start to learn dancing, the better. Kids cannot read when they have not learned the words, but we still see so many lovely young dancers giving really fabulous show on TV and stages. By contrary, for adults, even though they can do the reading quite smoothly, without learning of dance by doing and practising, they still do not know how to dance.

Second, for most subjects, even though both doing and reading are effective ways of learning, doing will largely inspire learners' interest in learning, thus is better. Interest is the best teacher ever. With interest, people can devote themselves on learning for dozens of hours one day without feeling of tired. However, without interest, even 30-minute class will be a disaster and a waste of time. When I was in high school, experiment class was the favorite time for students who majored in chemistry. They were really excited to see translucent solutions became blue when they were mixed, and gas could be created by them to make balloons. After every experiment class, they were more interested and curious about chemistry, and tried to find more books to read to find the answer. Most of students in my class admitted that it is experiment that evoked their interest in chemistry.

Admittedly, reading is a very important way of learning. Reading a book is just like talking with many great persons. Reading can enlarge our view of the world, and take us to brand new places where we can never reach in reality. Although learning by doing will be a better way of learning, we can never neglect learning by reading. Only when combining those two together, we can achieve the best learning finally.
