In this argument, the arguer suggest that the publisher,Newsbeat, should pay less attention to internatinal news and avoid displaying such news on their magazine covers. To support the conclusion, the claims that over the past three years, the poorest-selling magazines were those featured international news stories on the front
cover. Also, he draw the information about there was a significant decrease in the number of cover stories devoted to international news of the competitive magazines. At the first glance, this argument seems to be somewhat logical and reasonable, however, after a further consideration in details, I cannot agree with it for the
following reasons.
To begin with, the arguer fails to establish a causal relationship between featuring international news stories and the poor sales of these issues. To find the exact causes of the poor sales of the magazine, careful examinations should be applied to all the possibilities that have significant impact on circulation. Contingencies such as the popularity, the magazine title, the cover design, the contants of the magazine can affect the sales and distribution. It is entirely possible that the general sales in the whole nation was depressed over the past three years, as a result, Newsbeat could not avoid such bad situation. It might also be the case that, the decrease in the sales could attribute to the newsstands' declining, or perhaps the portable means of
communication such as the compuer was becoming more and more popular among the public. If this is the case ,then the conclusion that the decreaseing sales is caused by the increse of the featuring international news stories would lack any merites whatsoever.
What is more, the author commits a fallacy of faulty analogy in assuming that the argument is based on a false analogy between Newsbeat and its competitors. The author simply assumes that the two would face a completely same situation, but he fails to provide any evidence that is indeed comparable. For instance, it is entirely possible that the competitors are short of funds to continue supporting their foreign bureaus and they have to do this ,in order to save more money for the whole company. Or perhaps, Newsbeat has occupied most part of market share, as a result other similar magazine pulishers have to perform transition(change their
marketing strategy) to seek a way out of the predicament (plight). Therefore, the author cannot get any solid conclusion based on this faulty analogy.
Finally, the arguer assumes that featuring the international news on the front cover will in itself suffice to cause the increase in the cost of maintaining the foreign bureaus. Admittedly, featuring the international news on the front cover might be an important contributing factor;however, it is hardly the sole determining one. It is entirely possible that the cost of featuring the news on the front cover only accounts for a fairly small part of the whole cost, for the foreign bureaus themselves need large amounts of money, including the payments for the foreign correspondents , the foreign travel expenses.Or perhaps, price increases of the whole society which could
result in all kinds of news stories' cost rise, including the international news, would play significant role in leading to this increase.
As it stands, the arguer annot warrant his or heri claim on the basis of the scant evidence mentioned in the argument. To make it more logically acceptable, the arguer must present more facts that can substantiate that the featuring the international news on the front cover would definitely lead to decreasing sales of the magazine. |
