Languages, primarily served as vehicles for people’s ideas and feelings, have played anirreplaceable role in spreading and preserving the cultures behind(?).As the prevailing of a language will possibly lead to the prosperity of acertain culture, its decline and disappearance, on the other hand, may probablyhave a disastrous impact on the culture, and even the nation and the people, for languages are undoubtedly the foundation of culture and civilization, andsometimes, even the prerequisite of the existence of a people. Unfortunately, however, a great amount of languages spoken by minorities are facing the dangerof extinction for various reasons. This grave condition has urgently called forthe attention of the governments and their actions preventing the irreversibletragedy from happening.
According tothe recent survey conducted by UNESCO, more than 2500 kinds of languages are inthe severe danger of dying out, which account for one third of the total amountin the world. Compared by the data of 2001, the number has been multiplying, indicating the escalation and globalization of this problem. This appallingcondition may be originated from the following factors. First, theglobalization of commercial industry will inevitably lead to the unification oflanguage for the convenience of communicating with people all over the world. However, this means the major languages will become more and more widely usedwhile the minor ones are going to extinction silently. Second, the imbalance ofeconomic development adds to the adversity of the languages using by few peoplein poor areas, for the languages used in developed areas will probably dominatethe ones in the undeveloped at the time they come across with each other. Aproving example is the prevailing of Cantonese in China since the Reform andOpening-up. This, to some extent, is like what happened during the war, thatthe invasion of territory is often accompanied by the invasion of the languageand culture. What is worse, it seems that the youngsters have not realized theimportance of employing and protecting their own languages, instead, they areturning to some other languages to seek a sense of fashion, authority or evendignity. Besides, the rapid advancement in technology provides us with multiplefacilities to get in touch with universal languages, which means littleopportunities for dialects.
With the paceof the modernization and globalization has become(becoming) more rapidly(rapid,或把becoming改成growing),the danger of the less-known languages is seemingly inevitable, the trend irrepressible(这个词貌似通常把情绪的抑制不住). But why should the governments take pains to protect them fromdisappearing?
The direct andmost evident result may be the irredeemable loss of a unique culture, knowledge, conception and ideas it conveys. For the native speakers of theextinguished languages, it seems impossible for them to retrieve the sense ofindividual identity with the loss of languages. And the danger will become moresevere when it comes to the future of the nation, as Johan Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the most famous poets in human history, once stated that “The decline ofliterature indicates the decline of a nation; the two keep in their downwardtendency. In the terms of the whole world, the influence will be moresignificant and far-reaching. As linguists and anthropologists permanently loss(lose)this resource for revealing the process of language evolvement in humanhistory, as a result,(删,或者把之前的as删去)some mystery may remain unknown eternally, like the Maya mystery.
From mystandpoint, it is high time for the government of the country laid(tolay) enough emphases and offer sufficient financial support toprevent the nation’s precious heirlooms from missing in the irresistible trendsof globalization. One practicable(practical) action is to establishmuseums and research centers to collect, preserve and study the documents ofthe language, in order to set up the languages documentation. However, theessential part of the languages persistence should be the revitalizationprocess, for only the language is actively spoken by a considerable amount ofpeople can it completely come out of danger and be resurrected. So it is ofmore significance to encourage the people especially the young to use their ownlanguage as much as possible.
As thetreasures of all the human beings, every language is worthy protecting. Thisresponsibility is largely rested on the shoulders’ of the governments, and itis also the obligation for everybody to prevent our culture-heritage from dyingout.
