242The following appeared as an editorial in the student newspaper of Groveton College.

"To combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year were reported. The honor code has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Groveton honor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without."

This argument suggests that these institutions with dramatic rise in cheating should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton college for the reason of both the seemly proved effects and a recent survey. At first glance, the argument appears certain specific and plausible. A deeper investigation, however, reveals that it cannot substantiate the conclusion unless the further information about the survey is provided and other possible reasons for explaining the decreases in cheating are ruled out.

To begin with, the arguer insufficiently proves that Groveton's honor code is the only reason accounting for the dropped cheating reports. However, the truth is that a variety of different reasons can be employed to explain it. For instance, it is of big possibility that the new students enrolled by the college after the introduction of Groveton's honor code are more honest because the school admission's office pays more attention to applicants' credibility record. Or the cheating students in Groveton have quickly adapted to the new system so that their cheating behaviors are more unlikely to be found by other students. Without eliminating these possibilities, the conclusion cannot be well grounded.

Moreover, this argument provides no evidence that the survey's respondents are the representatives of the overall group of Groveton's students. Lacking such evidence, it is entirely possible that the students inclined to accept Groveton's honor code are more willing to respond to the survey than others. Furthermore, we are not informed about the size of the sample in the survey; the smaller the sample, the less reliable the survey's conclusion. In short, without better evidence that the survey is statistically reliable, the arguer cannot rely on it to draw any firm conclusions about the effect of Groveton's honor code system.

Last but not least, even if the honor code has proven successful in Groveton college, it is not reliable for the arguer to assume that this type of success can be replicated elsewhere. The truth, however, is that this is not the case at all. For instance, the students in another college may value the unity in the students more than the equality in the exams so that they won't notify the school even if they suspect someone has cheated. Without providing the information that the conditions in other institutions are similar to Groveton college's, the conclusion cannot be well sound.

To sum up, the argument, while it seems logical at first, has several flaws as discussed above. This argument could be improved by ruling out other reasons for the declined reported cases of cheating in Groveton college, and by providing sufficient evidence that the result of the survey is statistically reliable. It could be further improved if the arguer provides enough information to convince us that the conditions in other colleges or universities are similar to Groveton's.
