In this editorial, the author recommends that the institutions where cheating among students is rampant should adopt honor codes practiced in Groveton's, which advocates the students' own commitment not to cheat and the supervision among students. To support this conclusion, the author shows the statistics reflecting the positive effect of the honor code and gives the result of a recent survey revealing the students' feeling about the honor code. However, this evidence lends little support to the ultimate goal of the argument.

Moreover, we are not even convinced that the situation after five years is better in Groveton, as there are many factors involved other than the practice of the honor code. Perhaps the newly admitted students are more morally resistent to cheating. It is also likely that as time went by, the students tended to become silent about the cheating behavior. In all, the author fails to provide strong evidence that the honor code has the desirable effect.

The fact that most students felt that they would be more likely to cheat without the honor code might,  in a certain degree, show the effect of the honor code. Last but not least, we should decide everything on a case-by-case basis. Even if the honor code works well in Groveton, it might not be as effective in other institutions. There may be many reasons for the dramatic increase in cheating. Whether the honor code solves the problem depends on whether it handles the factors that cause the problem.

In sum, the argument is unconvincing as it stands. To make the recommendation more plausible, the author should provide strong evidence illustrating the merits of the honor code as compared to the old-fashioned system.
