这么晚才写好,给批改的同学添麻烦了,很抱歉。
TOPIC: ARGUMENT173 - The following is a memorandum issued by the publisher of a newsmagazine, Newsbeat, in the country of Dinn.
"Our poorest-selling magazine issues over the past three years were those that featured international news stories on their front covers. Over the same period, competing news-magazines have significantly decreased the number of cover stories that they devote to international news. Moreover, the cost of maintaining our foreign bureaus to report on international news is increasing. Therefore, we should decrease our emphasis on international news and refrain from displaying such stories on our magazine covers."

In this memo, the author suggests placing less emphasis on international news and refrain from showing such stories on their magazine covers. To support his suggestion, the author points out the fact that their poorest-selling magazine issues over the past three years were those featured with international issues on their front covers. Also, he shows us their competitors' reducing the number of cover stories about international news. He even uses the more cost of reporting international news as an evidence.
It seems that the author takes everything into consideration, but when scrutinizing those evidences, I find that his assumption that international stories lead to the poor-selling is unwarranted, and then he unfairly concludes that reporting such stories is not profitable.
First of all, no evidence is presented to tell us that those international stories are the cause of poor selling. The author tells us that those poorest-selling magazine issues in recent years had international news as their cover stories. But this may be only a coincidence. It is entirely possible that these international news had already been reported a lot by TV or radio program before Newsbeat so that people did not want to pay to read these stories any more. Then the failure of these issues may be the result of wrong choices of the editor. Thus, we can tell that even if Newsbeat pay less attention on international issues, this magazine may also not sell well until the editor is able to choose appropriate stories.
Also, without finding out the reasons why their competitors reduced the number of cover stories about international news, it is not advisable to following such reformation. Maybe editors on other magazine find they know more about other issues than international news. Thus, in order to make the right decision about what should be published, they change to report on other issues they are familiar with. If Newsbeat's employees know better about international issue, then reporting less international news would be a bad choice.
What's more, the higher cost of maintaining the foreign bureaus to report on international news does not equal to the less profits of reporting such stories and displaying them on the magazine covers. The high cost of reporting international issues may result from global recession or battles in certain area, for the reason that it would take more to ensure the safety and good living condition of their correspondent. But in these situations, people may want to know more about such news. Therefore, if Newsbeat pay much to obtain the real attractive international stories and report them timely, people may be more willing to buy these issues. Then, in contrast to the author's suggestion, the more selling might result in more profits.
In a nutshell, the author fails to consider some alternative explanations of these phenomenon, and thus makes his recommendation less convincing. He should analyze more information, deliberate other possibilities and then make a persuasive conclusion. This is also an essential ability a good news reporter should obtain. |
