TOPIC: ISSUE13 - "Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct."
WORDS: 519
TIME: 2h
DATE: 2009/6/7 21:43:00

How can you communicate with people who speak different languages, or read articles written in a language you cannot understand? Undoubtedly, we cannot live without languages. However, many of the world's lesser-known languages are disappearing if no action is taken, which means we will never know the stories in those languages. What's more, when a culture loses its language, it is more likely that the culture would extinct at the same time. Considering this, the government should act to protect the endangered languages within their ability.

Languages are humankind's principle tools for interacting and for expressing ideas, emotions, knowledge, memories and values. Languages are also primary vehicles of culture expressions and intangible culture heritage, essential to the identification of individuals and groups. Seeing the significance of language, how can we overlook the disappearing of a language? However, as reported, half of the 6,700 languages spoken today are in danger of disappearing before the century ends. While we lose a language, more do we lose, especially those precious intangible cultural heritages, not to mention poems and legend. Moreover, it is the diversity of culture that makes the world colorful and wonderful. As the vehicles of culture, culture may not exist without its language. If one day, only one language exists in the world, nobody would be glad to accept the fact. Therefore, efforts should be made in preventing languages from extinct.

Admittedly, a man's power is far from enough to keep a language alive. To save a language, we should gain more manpower and resources. As the leadership of a country, government can and should play an important role in language protection. With some policies encouraging language protection, more individuals and groups will take action and the government can also support them financially. Meanwhile, the government itself would deal with the problem effective for they has so many specialists and experts who can take part in or give advises which will make the protection appropriate. And the local government would also benefit from the act, since it can not only enrich people's spiritual life, but strengthen the national consciousness. Moreover the historical significance of saving the dead language is obvious, which may also stimulate the government to take action.

However, the government has to process affairs such as education, employment, environmental problems, so how to make a balance between the act to protect disappearing languages and other affairs within the country call for the government to consider carefully. For some rich countries, when needed, they can handle such issue effective with sufficient materials and manpower. But if the country cannot feed its citizens, how can they spare efforts in language protection, for example, some African countries which haven't solve the basic problems of famine and medical treatment. Nothing can be more urgent than improve the living condition of its citizens.

In summary, fully evaluated the status quo of the country, the government should decide what to do. We cannot say that it is the government's duty to act to prevent language from becoming extinct, but if possible, they should try their best in keeping its language and its cultural diversity.

首尾段写的比较好,中间三段可以再顺顺逻辑,有些句子如果平行结构能平衡,会让文章很出彩~~~~
