241"An individual's greatness cannot be judged objectively by his or her contemporaries; the most objective evaluators of a person's greatness are people who belong to a later time."

There would be no history if an individual’s greatness could be judged objectively by his or her contemporaries. People can realize things that happened few thousands years ago in northern of ancient empire of China, where there was an emperor named Yingzheng. He unified the vast expanse land of China where it was wide enough from the high jokul to grass land by his special policy, which someone called it authoritarian slaughter, and someone called it patriotic action. We can find that Yingzheng was a center of the violent controversy in his own lifetime. Is he a murder of human being or a hero of the nation? He left a question to his contemporaries and our modern society.

For one thing, it is fairly clear that time is the most impartial judge who can dry up the sea of the history leading to appearance of the reef of truth. Many years ago while the ancient emperor Yingzheng ordered the millions of his warriors to attack the enemy, other tribes, who can evaluate whether he was wrong or right? He was a killer, or even, a war criminal, in the eyes of his conquered enemies. However, this was not the case at all always; many of us, his descents, believed that he was a brilliant emperor who had unified the currency, letters and metrology in ancient China in order to build up one of the greatest kingdom of those days. Suppose if those ancient men who said Yingzheng was a murder wake up from the tomb today, what they will say?

Secondly, according to the author, what is called “individual’s greatness”? Everyone has his or her own view about greatness, varying according to the age, education, and stand of the profits? etc. While those warriors were willing to die for Yingzheng, his enemies were waiting to kill him. Whereas Yingzheng was a hero in his warriors’ eyes, at the same time, he was a murder to the enemies. Therefore the individual's greatness is based on the specific evaluator who has specific point of view rather than on the individual’s real power, wisdom, or dignity. So, the real power and greatness is the time.

Why, you may wonder, how can the present posterity guarantee that which is truth or falsehood at ancient time? Admittedly, the contemporaries were closer to the “truth”; they are able to see enough evidences to overthrow the later generations’ hypothesize. But even in this most favorable circumstance only seldom contemporaries can judge the things objectively without any subjective passion. Some years ago, our knowledge of the earth was confined to the two-dimensional shape and we did not know that we could travel round the earth. Can we blame those who said the earth is flat? We can perhaps forgive those who deemed the ball shaped earth was produced by someone’s rumor; However, our astronauts have taken the pictures of the whole earth in space already. So the limitation of the knowledge we possessed result in that the most objective evaluators are people who belong to a later time.

Even these days, when not all things seem positive, the belief remains that for every thing there is a rational solution. We have to wait for the result which let the descents evaluate what we are.
