It is a complicated issue about who gives society something of lasting value by comparing artist and critic. When we trace back to the original motivations and shaping process of every art form, both critic and artist have developed art history. However, if the definition of the lasting value of art is continuing pursuing and discovering aesthetics of mankind, the honor of lasting value will be given to the artists.

Since many artists overemphasize self-discovery and creation, they often have no idea about how to show their works to society. It is true that critics play a vital role in translating and understanding art to our society. Also, a lot of people cannot comprehend and appreciate the artworks directly when they first touch them. Therefore, people need art critics to explain the artworks with some descriptive words. These art critics have professional knowledge and perspectives in appreciation and evaluation of arts, which could help people to understand the artworks thoroughly and properly. As the artworks of Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo da Vinci, people may feel less than Mona Lisa’s mysterious smile when they look at the painting. But the critics can put spectators into the art environment by providing the story, the backdrop and analysis, which could give spectators some ideas about what the artist want to express and where the inspiration of the artwork comes from. Therefore, the translating and understanding of the artworks from critics could come down in our society from one generation to another.

However, critics do not always make positive effect on art. Since critics have their own disciplines in aesthetics and they seldom agree with each other; in order to have a standard to critic art, they often only admit the artworks which according to current mainstream. But as we all know, creativity is the foundation of artists who cannot bear making every work all the same and ensure every piece of artwork according to current society’s standard. When artists’ achievements cannot be accepted by the society, they have to meet the disciplines just via continuing creating new works for the reason that they are not good at defending themselves. And sometimes this stress could impede or even end the artists’ creation. For example, Vincent Van Gogh, his paintings were not acknowledged in his time, the biggest hope of Vincent was to paint some artworks similar to Picasso and Monet whose paintings are mainstreams of the society. But this style did not work out for Vincent. In the end, he had to paint his own art form desperately because critics could not accept his art style. No one at that time found that his symbolic and intense color and his vibrated and moved line predicted the beginning of postimpressionism. Thus, people do not realize critics have impeded and delayed, with their own special criteria, how many artworks development in music, vision art, and literature, let alone they give lasting value to our society.

Finally, the classic artworks and art forms will exist forever and they have already given our society lasting value. Some of them will never disappear no matter how critics review them. There is a little story describing this relationship, "Many people pretend that they understand art. Take picture for example, they always tell you what a picture about. But the truth is, many pictures are not about anything. They are just pretty patterns. We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material.” This interesting story show us that the criticism words may make a great change to the original artworks and the tastes of people in art may be affected from time to time, but the artworks made by artists and the art form has shaped already will always unchanging.这段不错，对前面的加强。CRITIC会改变作者原意的例子也不错
