Penetrating into almost every aspect of our life, technology significantly influences, even alters, social customs and ethics. However, it cannot determine them, since technology is just a tool we invented, and it does not know any better, we human on the other hand do.
Admittedly, technology has some once well-accepted social customs and ethical philosophy rewritten. If it is the advent of steam engine liberated women from household chore and realized their social value, then today's technology of birth control has helped women establish a stronger social statue with more choices and rights. And, it is also this technology stimulates the heating trend of premarital sex, which is still in hot debates of various communities. Meanwhile, how much privacy is concerned when personal information, picture or video is cast out into the World Wide Web? With technologies flowing into offices, corporation executives decide to monitor employee's e-mails, phone conversations and even most daily moves to ensure their productivity. Why should this step not be considered over the line of social ethics? Therefore, technology has either given us a new definition of privacy or increased our toleration for it being intruded. Moreover, individual freedom of speech and accessibility to information is violated, if the concept is still the same today, when government blocks a blog or forum web site where people can openly express opinions and hold discussions on any topic. To some extent, technology indeed influences and even redefines certain social customs and ethnics.
Yet, a larger picture of technology and social customs will reveal a truth: technology has not changed the substance of most social customs, but only changed the way we realize them. Men and women still have to dress properly according to different occasions, but technology provides them with more choices of fabric, color and style. Human are still actively social animals, and today we knit our social network easier and wider with online social applications like Myspace and Facebook. Friends still send out holiday and birthday wishes, and phones, instant messengers and online e-cards spares them the trip to post office. Families still unite on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and cars, trains and planes save them from torturing long journey in horse carriages. In short, however technology has advanced and changed the way we live, basic human needs are always the same, which determines that the ultimate goal of technology development is to make our life easier and better instead of transforming it into any new form we can hardly recognize.
Take this point a step further, as far as human needs and well-being is concerned, technology does not determine social ethics, and the reality is exactly the opposite. Ethics is a fundament of human civilization and evolution, with which we lead the way of where technology goes. With every new rule and policy carried out, we keep technology progressing  on the track of benefiting human interest instead of hurting it. That's why various policies of cyber crimes have come into existence, which prevents online misconducts like hackering other people's bank account password. That's also why sensitive technological field like nuclear power is under close watch of government. Since the first nuclear bomb detonated in 1945, debated on the morality of using this most destructive weapon has never stopped heating up. Serving as an important criterion, ethics is and has to be static for human to follow, to refer, and to make sure every change in technology meets its standard.
To sum up, technology has changed the way we live, how we perceive this world and how we relate to one another. But with no thought or emotion, technology is a tool, which can hardly determine anything. And it is all about us when it comes to how to develop or use it.
