I am not agree with the speaker’s assertion that technologies can determine social customs and ethic. Although technical development may influence the social activities, it can not lead the social customs and ethics, which have been passed from generation to generation and little has been changed for a long time.


To begin with, technologies do have changed people’s life style in some aspects, lots of new inventions provide comforts to human life. With the development of nuclear power station, almost inexhaustible power can be generated, people do not have to fear the energy crisis, with the invention of eagle eye system in the tennis match, players have the chance to challenge the referees, with the expending of mass media, people can become familiar with many places and make friends with more people who share the same interest, through the help of large machines, like wheel loaders and off high way trucks, people can get more resources from the earth.

Although new technologies can be found everywhere in nowadays life, but the spiritual or the internal meaning of different activities are still the same. There are plenty of things that we will not abandon. For example, Lots of nutritional supplements, which are full of different kinds of vitamins and protein, have been invented, but instead of changing to the small pills, human kind still enjoy having foods, which are cooked in different ways. And most of the governments still ban the cloning of human, which may cause serious moral problems.

Moreover, Customs and ethics, which can be defined as the rules of behavior that coordinate our interactions with others, indicate the established and approved ways of doing things, of dress, of speech and of appearance, although these vary and evolve through time, they are determined by the human kind itself. . Use Christmas presents for another example, although new ways of delivering can be used, people still enjoy finding presents in the socks rather than from internet or elsewhere. Take tennis match for another example, although we have eagle eye system, line umpire, who calls all shots relating to the assigned lines, which is a traditional custom of tennis sports, are still existed in every tennis match.

In sum, improvement of technologies do have effects on the our daily life, but it is the human kind determine the social customs and ethics. Moreover, we must ensure that any technologies are not used to jeopardize society but to serve human beings.
