In contemporary society, technology is developing at an eye-dazzling rate and the proliferation of Internet render the world a small village. In light of this globalizing trend, many people harbor the view that we are supposed to establish global universities to cater for this situation. From my own perspective, this assertion is oversimplified.
Yet, it is really true that the establishment of such kind of global universities brings about benefits. Nowadays it is obvious that people are threatened by so many things. To be specific, the global warming, deforestation, wars, poverty, terrorist activity, to name but few, all those troubles are highly likely to exert a detrimental influence upon the existence of human beings eventually. Moreover, though national boundaries exist, we live in the same earth and all the countries’ interests are mutually dependent like lips and teeth. Sometimes some problems just appeared in only one country, if left unfettered, it may become a tremendous disaster to all the human beings. Given the severity of the scenario, we must make joint-effort, after all, whichever country is feeble and incompetent when confronted with such tough tasks. Under such circumstances, the establishment of global universities, which gathered talents from all over the world and aimed at tacking with pressing problems, is really a marvelous idea.
However, we should deep further. The possibility of building global universities is questionable. Those students come from different countries with different cultural backgrounds, different view systems, different religion beliefs. All those difference, inevitably, lead to the tension and conflict between students. Common sense informs us that when people speak different languages, they can hardly communicate and understand each other, let alone discuss a problem effectively. Moreover, based on the fact that students are characterized with the identity of their motherland and, to some extent, represent their country, students are apt to speak from their own country’s perspective when talking about some certain issues. In some cases, some of them even go to extremes. I would be hard press to imagine how terrible it would be if the students, from Israel and Pakistan, argued to the point of fighting with each other, which turned a peaceful class into a pandemonium. Consequently, all those situations serve to undermine the existence and stability of the global university.
Furthermore, there is no doubt that establishing global universities require an astronomical amount of money, which many poor countries can hardly afford. Those countries, more often than not, are haunted by wars, hungry and so forth and the daily necessities of people here are even inadequate. Here I’d like to put out a question: is it possible that those countries are willing to pay vast amount of money to support a global university? In addition, those global universities may fall into places for rich countries to perform their political power. They may inculcate students here to behavior on behalf of those nations’ interest and easily spell some discordance among nations. Flying in face of those situations, the establishment of global universities is unsuitable.
Finally, the reason why so many people are eager to build a global university is that they assume that this kind of university has not emerged and thus we should make some efforts. Ironically, they are so superficial. As a matter of fact, many top universities like Harvard, Stanford have already devoted to educate students with global view, for the professors instruct students to consider things not only from their own circumstances, but take more people’s need into consideration. The ultimate goal of establishing such universities lie in instructing students who possessed broader views of the world rather than simply build universities. Thus, it is not necessarily for many countries to allocate money to build a global university.
From what we are discussing about, we can safely draw the conclusion that inferiorities of building a global university outweigh its superiorities. And therefore, the suggestion of building global universities is unwise and unrealistic. |
