The following appeared in a memo from the president of a company that
makes breakfast cereals.
In a recent study, subjects who ate soybeans at least five times per
week had significantly lower cholesterol levels than subjects who ate
no soy products. By fortifying our Wheat-O cereal with soy protein, we
can increase sales by appealing to additional consumers who are
concerned about their health. This new version of Wheat-O should
increase company profits and, at the same time, improve the health of
our customers.

In this argument, the arguer recommends that soy protein should be integrated to Wheat-O cereal in order to make excessive profit and improve customers' health. To support this claim, the arguer cites the study which indicate that cholesterol level of people who eat soybeans a lot are lower than those who do not eat soy products. The notion of the arguer is specious. However, the procedure of reasoning is flawed in several aspects.

First, soybeans lead to lower cholesterol levels, but we can not get the conclusion that soy protein plays a dominative and exclusive role in this effect. Soy protein is not the only element of soybean, which is a complex of fibers, fats, vitamins and other ingredients known or unknown for us. The reduce of cholesterol may not be the consequence of soy protein, but may be the joint effect of several compounds or just relate to other elements in soybean. Simply extracting soy protein out may not achieve the same effects as soybeans as a whole.

Second, the health of our body with lots of organisms is not determined exclusively by the level of cholesterol. Although cholesterol is an important fact, other elements concerning brain, heart, liver and sex may have equal or more significant impact on human body.  In some worsen cases,  lowering cholesterol alone may do disservices to the our organisms.  More facts relating to our health should be taken into account to pursuit or keep a healthy body.

Third, whether the profit can cover the cost is not clear. To develop and promote a new product, we should consider whether it worth the cost. A company must pay for the fees of R&D, advertising, market survey and so forth. Even if the new product will enhance the sales, whether and how long it will take to get all the money spent on this product back are the questions we should go through carefully in the first place.

More information is required to make a more intelligent decision. Research to determine the exact factors causing the decreasing of cholesterol in soybean ought to be done firstly. And some ingredients which benefit the general health should be added to Wheat-O. And the most important criteria for a company is whether it is worth to do it.

We humans have been evolving since the day we were created in physiology, culture, politics, knowledge, and so forth. Individual changes and the society consisted of individuals change as well. The fundamental objectives of research in history are to shape and envision our future.

Few could dispute that we have experienced significant changes in culture. Nearly 150 years ago, negroes were suffering dark, shackle, and pain and were fighting for their freedom. At that time, no one could dream of one day that they can fight for the president of the United States of America. And now, the president in black skin is responsible for the right of all the people in America. Thereby, I believe that our attitude towards people who are distinct to us have evolved to a new stage with more respect, compassion and rationality. If we brings here a man from 150 years ago, his behavior will be extremely different from what he had after living in modern society for several years. The diversities of culture lead to the significant differences in behavior.

We can see the great advancements in technology today. We had been dreaming of flying in the sky and we have been in the moon now. The industrial revolutions accelerated the progress to modern society in which we enjoy laptops, mobile phones, microwaves and other kinds of hi-tech products. We stand on the shoulder of the giant and are higher than them as a result.

In my opinion, besides satisfying our curiosity of where we come from, the study of history mainly aims to conduct our behaviors now in order to achieve a brighter future. By analyzing the crucial events in the past, we may find out why they happened and their consequences and then set up criteria to confine us aiming to reduce mistakes. We have learned far more than we can imagine from mistakes and successes we have made.

Compared with the rudeness and ignorance in the past, modern civilization enjoys respect and knowledge that distinguish us from any other species. Evolution made it happen and the historians try to mark the changes so we can predict our future.
