65.Thefollowing appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of
cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of
both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five
best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses
from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World
magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its
subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory,
the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue
stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate
primarily on domestic cheeses."

It is argued that because last year the bestfive sellers of cheese in a newest store are all domestic,and a recently survey by the CW has showed that more and more readers of CWprefer the domestic cheese,also,according to economic theories,to dicontinuestocking the imported cheese can reduce the expense,thus,the government decideto change the old pattern of stocking both kinds of cheese,and,instead,concentrate on the stock and selling of the domestic cheese.However,thedicision is lack in general consideration.

First of all,the datathat the five best sellers are all demestic is unpursuadable.The result comesfrom merely one newest store of the area.It can not represent all the otherstores.The newest store may have taken some methods such as to offer discountsto make the domestic cheese sell better.Or the store is located in an areawhere most of the residents tend to buy domestic products,for example there maylive many elder residents whose perception are more traditional than theyounger ones.What’s more,as is said,it is a newest store,there’s no necessarilyevidence to prove that it is like all the other stores in the past years tostock equally domestic and imported cheess.Maybe it’s just because it sellsmostly domestic cheese that the best five sellers are all domestic.

The survey conductedby the CW is also not convincing.Whether the magazine is famous is remainedunknown,so it’s readers cannot efficiently reflect the general opinion of thecheese.Even though the CW is a popular magazine,having fame all over thecountry,the way that the magazine take to do the survey is uncertain to us.Ifit uses methods such as putting the survey papers within the magazine to reachthe reader who buy it,most regular magazine readers,or at least people aroundme will know that it’s of no effect.Because most people will pay no attentionto the unremarkable paper,let alone to pay to send it back to the magazine office.All this lead to the unprecision of the survey taken.

It is true that to limit the stock of someproducts will reduce the cost,but the reduce of the expense does not directlymean that the profits will increase.The profits consist of the total expense andthe total income.When the income is more than the expense,we earn profits.Thelimit of the stock do save the expense,but it has effects on both the expenseand the income of the imported cheese.If the unit price of the imported cheeseis higher than that of the domestic cheese,it is probable that selling a smallamount of imported cheese will earn more than selling a large amount ofdomestic cheese.Thus,although the expense has decresed, the income isuncertain,so whether there is profit is unpredictable.

To sum up,all the phenomenon about the cheese dohave value for us to take into account.But before more all-around research ofthe whole cheese market, we cannot simply to get a conclucion that to stop thestock of imported cheese will profit for sure.
