Standing on the study, and the assumption that catching colds can enhance immune system, the author concludes that an active social life probably is able to improve immune system. The process seems logical at the first glance, but at fact it is invalidity.
Firstly, it is presumptuous to judge that it is the active social life that helps boost the immune system in accordance with the recent study. On the one hand, the background condition of the people joining in the study is covered. For example, whether these people are on the same healthy level and their age are the same or not. On the other hand, the result of the report is worthy of suspicion. It is possible that people who take part in many social activity haven’t report when they catch a cold, for they are very busy in leading a social life such as meeting a friend, having a social dancing date and presenting business affairs; in addition, after all it is a piece of cake for most of people, especial for adult compared with their daily work.
Secondly, even if the physical condition remains the same and the result of report merit confidence, the conclusion of the study is unwarranted. Helpful social activity may help strengthen body, because it makes a second chance to take exercise. But we all know that people who attend social activities have a opportunity to contact with bad environment, for instance, some saloon, some gambling places and so; so that they have a great possibility-catching a cold. Additionally, in contrast too many social activities may cause a great pressure on people, at the even worse, over-pressure makes the immunity down. Based the above discussion, it is dangerous for the people who have many social ties taking more social activity.
Thirdly, the assumption is unreasonable. There is no evidence showing that catching a cold could makes immunity strong. Additionally, Even if catching a cold could gain a temporary immunity, there is no information to explain how long it is, so there is evidence to guarantee they will never catch a cold which is the same as that before in future. What is important is that the new immunity can’t fight for all related virus.
To sum up, the author has no information as convincing evidence, and omits many other factors causing having a cold. If the author want to persuade his conclusion is advisable, he must provide evidence about the background of the study in order to explain that participants have a same physical condition, at the same time give more academic information on whether catching a cold can make people’ immunity better.
