Can we kill 100 million people in China because the population is too large? "No", all of us will give the same answer, "that's cruel and inhumane."

There is a saying that "if a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable", which is obviously wrong. Otherwise, upon the theory, the above ridiculous conclusion could be accepted.

Considering such an issue, the first question is how to define a worthy goal. "Worthy" means having worth or value. However, the worth or value can change when seen in different perspectives.
For example, the short-term goals may contradict the long-term ones. In the time of agriculture beginning to develop, it was smart of people to fire the forests to get farmland. Nowadays people have found the forests’ significant effects in remaining soil and modulating climates, so the burning of forests is turned into destruction of environment. Therefore, the worthy goal should be of lasting value and based on overall analysis.

Now let's turn to the means taken to attain the worthy goals. In general, the means should conform to some principles. Firstly, the means are required to be humane and moral. For instance, rich and strong nation should not invade weak countries for economical benefits. The pursuit of money is on the basis of equity and reciprocity. To realize the equity and lessen the conflicts, WTO was formed to help all the nations make trades smoothly.

Secondly, the means should keep the long-range benefits in mind. The world belongs to all the people living today and in the future. Human of today have no rights to benefit themselves in the price of destroying the environment. The greenhouse effect is well known to change the climate. A recent study shows that the sheep living in Scotland shrink in the two decades, which may be the result of the warmer winters. No one knows what the changes in climate would bring to our descendants. The sustainable development has to be one important subject from now on.

Thirdly, the means should consider the benefits of other life forms. The earth belongs to all the lives, including the animals and plants. People always have the sense of superiority to other life forms. They kill the deer for hides and kill the elephants for ivories, making species decreased sharply in the human history. Various species of animals and plants are the treasure of the world. They should grow in the wild after thousands of years, other than being showed in the museum as plant or animal specimens.

As the society develops human are able to accomplish more and more goals. To realize that the means is as significant as the goals is of great importance. What we need is not only to attain the worthy goals, but also to keep a healthy and energetic earth for our descendants.
