Many people have a strong desire to have a travel to some other country not only to enjoy a feast for eyes but also to experience some other style of living. As is known to us, the way people look, dress, and act varies throughout the world. The diversity cannot be simply due to the differences among different geographic positions, because the way people of a society look, dress, and act is always having some correlation with the culture of the society in a sense.
Quite often does the way reveal people's attitudes and interests and therefore we can infer much about a society's ideas and values via a comprehensive research in the appearance and behavior of its people. Since almost everyone cares much about his or her reputation in the society, the majorities have to and even are willing to perform themselves in a way that is consistent with what is mostly advocated according to the society's ideas and values. While the majority of a society obey the rules based on the society's main value system, there are always a minority of people who refuse to accept the society's values. In spite of this, we can easily distinguish the minority from the majority because the minorities are accustomed to acting themselves absurdly in the majority's eyes and feel like playing abnormal roles in the society in order to stand out in case of that their opinions are ignored. For example, the cynics are free from other's comments and Diogenes pretended not to see Alexander regardless of how much respect had been paid to the empire. Hence we can figure out the main value system of a society by observing the majority's manners and acquire more details about the society's ideas and values from the minority.
However, the straightforward conclusion has a critical fallacy that the premise whether people can actually act as they like is overlooked which seriously undermines the assertion. If in a society people's actions are under a great restriction, the result of a research in people's behavior may be misleading.
Whether people in a society have freedom to perform themselves is determined by the social system. In a democratic society, we need not to suspect of the credibility of the conclusion. Nevertheless it is not correct of a despotic society. During the Qin Dynasty(emerged two thousand years ago and last for more than one hundred years in ancient China), the empire forbade any actions which whatsoever had negative impacts on his domination and deprived people of their rights to express their true feelings. As a consequence, only respect to the empire could be seen instead of the true idea of the society that people detested the empire because of his ruthless explosion towards them.
In conclusion, people's performance displays much about the society's ideas and values only in democratic societies. In other cases, we should take more factors that influent people's way to act into account and not be presumptuous. Moreover, the way people look, dress, and act also reveals the trend of a society, which deserves much attention as well.
