Argument127
127.The vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
"In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits."
提纲:
1.
In this recommendation, the vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries recommends that we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. To better bolster his recommendation, he presents the fact that employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished and therefore makes a assertion that electronic monitor can certainly prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits. First of all, the reduction of the amount of time employees spend on the computer entertainments does not mean a better working efficiency, moreover,
a better work ethic. These all based on the fact that the employees may squander their valuable working time on some other things, including making phone calls, sleeping, going out and do something like shopping. Therefore we should not build a causal relationship between the better working efficiency and a reduced time for computer recreation. Unless the vice president can eliminate all these possibilities, the conclusion itself is unconvincing. Another problem with the argument is that, improvement of employees’ productivity does not stand for the increase in the total profits. However, the total profit rest on several respects, such as the fierce competitive market, competitors in the same working field, costs of the raw material and employees’ wages and some other expenditure. How the vice president could merely attributes profit’s augment to employee’s productivity without ruling out all the other possible reasons that may contributes to the increased profits. Last but not the least, as we all know, this electronic monitor is used by Climpson to supervise its staff. We all familiar with the proverb, every coin has its two sides. It is likely that this monitor system will bring about the complaints and dissatisfactions among the employees. Its staff might become passive and negative; this may in turn result in lower working efficiency and even the drop of profits, which is beyond expectation. Likewise, no evidence is presented to substantiate the assumption that computer recreation causes profit’s declination. There exist possibilities that proper computer recreation makes employees more energetic and thus raise working efficiency. In conclusion, the recommendation relies on certain doubtful assumptions that render it unconvincing as it stands. To better bolster his recommendation, the vice president must provide more evidence concerning the effectiveness of this electronic monitor system. Apart from this, he should also ruling out other possibilities that affect the working efficiency.
